A few weeks ago my back box fell off...no idea when or where! I really should get round to doing it, however in some ways I can't really be bothered!
It genuinely seems no noiser whatsoever (otherwise I might have realised when it fell off!), it's not going to get in the way when off roading, and it's not going to cost me any money to leave as is!
However, are there any negative implications? Is it illegal not to have one? Is the fuelling affected (take the back box off a bike and the fuel burn is hotter)?
Your thoughts are appreciated!

I don't think the back box is required as I've seen various members who have removed the back box and gone for a side exit exhaust outlet instead. You could maybe go alont that avenue :?:
I could be wrong though

I think it will fail the MOT, as I think the exhaust has to vent the exhaust gases out of range of the bodywork.
-
That is correct, it will fail the MOT as the system is incomplete & not exiting from the body...all to do will gases building up in the vehicle
-
If the back ones fallen off the heavy monster under the middle will be close behind, put a new one on the back, and when the bigun goes replace with a pipe, saves the swinging weight busting the front pipe off the turbo!

Even though it was several years ago when I had my other Disco, Kwik Fit did a middle and back box - fitted - for £54

Must of been many years ago

Must of been many years ago
it was about 2 years ago, in fact i don't even think it was that as the 2 cars i had inbetween the disco's only lasted about 12 months, not sure what they are charging now :-k

Replaced the middle box of my V8 last week for £55.

bent mine a while ago and just just got a peice to slip over where the bracket is, just a straight through. like you say not much difference in noise, bit more clearance and easier than a side exit but it has crossed me mind. alan.....

My back box has also fallen off my 200, and as I had my MOT yesterday I figured I needed to do something!! So i cut a straight piece of exhaust off an old one, welded it on to roughly where the old one used to finish and that was that.
It sailed its MOT yesterday both visually and the emissions :D

i bought a 60+mm 90deg bend from work, cut the rear boc of and clamped said bent on. Its now angled down and to the side and sounds quite cool ! 8)

This is how the tailpipe on my 200tdi exits.... quite unusual, but VERY effective and out of the way for offroading!!! the old pipe ended up facing forwards under the rear axle... hence the slight modification... i still have a rear box, but no centre one...!!

Thanks for the tips guys...I guess if it's illegal then I'll probably just order a new exhaust and have a go myself.
Cheers

No One said it was Illegal Iain!!!! Yes if your exhaust does not clear the fumes away from the body then it will fail the MOT, but that does not make it illegal. If it is noisy (which they are not) then the police may have something to say, but regarding illegal? No, its not!!
I'll go outside now and get a pic of mine, to see what can be simply done.

Ah, I read "fail MOT" as "Illegal"...look forward to the advice!
Ta :D

Right, only got a couple cos the batteries have died on me but this is what I have done..
The box had departed behind the rearmost hanger, leaving about a half inch of pipe. So I got a piece off an old Rangy back box with the grinder and hamered it onto the stub. I then backed that up with a couple of tack welds, then a piece of exhaust repair tape, and finally a clamp just to be sure. Sailed its MOT with this on Wed.
Ooops, The pics are to big!!! I'll need to figure out how to resize and go from there
-
And the other one
-
Mine has no rear box either... I kept hitting it when off roading ... so off it came...
Sailed through MOT, no real change in noise levels, and it seems to have a little more poke...but that could be my imagination....

Great, thanks for the pictures and the advice guys, perhaps something similar may be the easy answer!
Cheers!

Watch the wiring loom, the hot gasses will melt the wires with no back box. Found out the hard way on my mothers 300tdi
