Title: old wives tales that work ??
Post by: burgerman on September 14, 2007, 13:28:24
We  recently had a large influx of oversize spiders inside the house, Anyhow was chatting to one of the passing locals, and he said pickup some conkers and put then in the area of the spiders and that"l stop um

Any how we are open minded( some would say gullable) so we did what he said, n bobs ya relation, all the spiders in that area have shipped out      Dunno why ?? but works for us

Any to add to this ???

I have heard this before, but never tried it.

Apparantly they don't like the smell and you should replace the conkers yearly to maintain their effectiveness...

I'm a firm believer in the Old Norfolk Way of weather forecasting.

You hang a bit of seaweed out of your window.
If the weed is wet, it means it's raining.
If the weed is dry, it means it's sunny.
If the weed is moving about, it means its windy.
Simplicity in itself!

So if I put a few conkers on the dash of the 110, and hang a few off the roof gutter - will it rid me of all the cobwebs ?

Both the Disco and 110 are covered in cobwebs and spiders, yet SWMBO's Golf (parked in the same place) has none..........bizarre !

As it happens wifeys 90 is on the drive conducting this very experiment at the moment, she has a few spiders that visit her everyday on hte motorway section of her journey ( much to her fright)   so we swapped the cars for the day and placed a few conkers inside to see what would happen  :?    and of course left the sunroof open so they can get out easily    or maybe more coming in      Will post the results later

Vinegar is good for getting rid of rust - I tried it on some rusty roof rack u-bolts the other day. A few minutes in a pot with a bit of vinegar and they were like new.

Have to oil quickly though, or they just rust again.

If you can see the weed, it means it's foggy
If the weed is gone, it means there is a hurricane

The conkers does work, but no number of conker trees will keep the spiders out of the downstairs loo.

Its not an old wives tale but an old zulu one.
Years ago when i was a nipper whe had a big walnut tree in our bak garden, evey year the walnut were small and not very nice tasting.
One day at work my dad mentioned it to an old zulu who used to work for him.
The old fella told my dad to take a big stick and early in the morning smack the tree while yelling at it !
Well the old boy went out next morning armed with a broom handle and gave the walnut tree a right good beating while swearing his head off. My brother, mother and I laughed our heads off at the old man, beating the tree.
Anyway the following year we had millions of huge walnuts, and i mean millions, the old boy was making walnut yogurt, walnut cakes walnut dye. He was giving bag and bags of them away.
Just goes to show !!those zulu's know a thing or two.

Curious.  I know plants tend to flower when they're stressed - because they're trying to reproduce before they kick the bucket.  I wonder if this is the explanation.

I work a similar policy with the household electrical items.  If one isn't pulling its weight, I punish it, in front of the others.

For example, my useless Bluetooth headset, which used to cut out in calls, sound quality was rubbish, kept dropping the connection, etc.  After losing the connection several times in an important business call, I took it out into the garage, got a big lump hammer, and smashed it to pieces on the concrete floor.

Word gets around all the other white goods & electronic items and they start bucking their ideas up.

I did the same recently with a piece-of-crap Flymo garden vac which was about as useful as a chocolate teapot.  It pays to keep them on their toes.

Athletes foot
Wee on the infected area prior to having a shower. Something in human urine kills the fungus/infection.
Yes i have tried it and it works.

Will definately be trying the conker thing!!!
It would appear that the spiders in my house have been reproducing like rabbits.  I caught one at the top of our stairs last night, it was sat on the top step, staring at me, willing me to dare to go past it to get to the loo.  Every time I moved, it moved, if I went left it did the same!
So I caught him with my spider catcher and chucked him out of the bedroom window.  But when I turned round, there by the door was his twin brother!!! 8-[

Will go down to the woods tomorrow armed with a couple of bin liners to fill with conkers!   :)

Varoocas. Or how ever you spell it!

Banana skin applied for about a day with yellow side up. Plaster over the top to hold in place. Bobs ur uncle. My ex land lady was a nurse and her daugther had a verooca for years and nothing moved it. I told her this trick and it has never come back.

Open cuts etc.

If you get a small cut or like me in the winter the skin around your nails easily tears and opens up use super glue. It holds it together whilst it is healing and it is also poorous so air gets in and helps it heal faster.

Well burnt on food in pans.

Get some genuine coka cola and put it in the pan and bring to the boil for a few minutes and hey presto burnt on food comes clean off.  :D

I read a top tip a few years ago:

If you are cleaning a frying pan with burnt-in dirt and fat, soak it for a while in warm water with detergent, then, when nobody is looking, throw it away.

BANANA skin

yes it does work and we used it in podiatry/chiropody especially for red haired/freckly kids.
There is an enzyme in the skin which lyzes the skin cells and releases the virus into the blood stream and allows the body to fight off hte virus. They may get a few more before the main one goes but it is better than the gunk you buy from pharmacy.

also urine works as well and was frequently used for treating leather and skins

Therefore endeth the lecture.

laughed at the appliance thing. It works on husbands as well
