Went on a pay and play day at devils pit on sunday in the wifes 1996 vitara and the front diff caseing has broken where the bracket is, the question is what do i do to improve it, because i don't want this to happen again!! will land rover axles go on or equivelent if so which ones? and how much work is involved to acheive this? quite fancy the idea of having a beam axle on the front to match the rear. Mods so far include:
1 1/2" pro comp srings
1 1/2" Bitz for Vitz spacers
31" Greenway Machos
Thanks in advance
Nick

sammy axle is the normal one.
lots of work though.
-
i fancy a solid/live axle on the front of mine but like suzota says its a lot of work.
the easiest mod you could do thatll improve the front diff is to fit a steel axle from either a v6 or td gv. you will have to swap the r&p's around but it is defo something to think about
-
What are r&p's?
-
is the gearing the same ? :?:
-
Ring and Pinions are the gears in the diff.
Vitara use a lower ratio than Samurai.
You will need to take the diff out of the Samurai axle, and strip the diff to remove the R&P then refit the Vitara R&P.
The R&P have to be set up CAREFULLY!!!!!! Not a job for an amature or if you've never done one before get a pro to do it.
Devon 4x4 will do it.
If you set them up wrong it will destroy the diff!!!
If you dont swap the R&P the front and rear axles will turn at different speeds, this will break your drive train in about 1 metre!!

I've had Vitara R&P's (Ring and Pinnions) built into a 2.0L TD Vitara steel diff casing... have a read of that... my mate Rich has a steel casing for sale, email if you're interested and I'll pass his details on - dave@k9rdj.co.uk
The other way to alleviate stresses is to fit front axle drop brackets, available from that lovely man at www.Bits4Vits.com (errrr, that'll be me then? )
Here they are here - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Suzuki-Vitara-Front-Axle-Drop-Brackets-lowers-diff-25mm_W0QQitemZ140159073214QQihZ004QQcategoryZ10426QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

Hi dave just bought the drop backets off you  , i'm the one who sent you a long email and asking you if you had been to Bala.
-
Aha... so you're sorted already?
Have to pop my head in here more often... used to now and again but it always seemed quiet? It's livened up a bit nowadays then?

yep, just finished taking the broken one off, my new steel one is arriving tomorrow, just need to get the gearing swapped over now and put it back on.
-
Ha ha, cheers Si, you know I owe you loads already!
I like that Nick... "Just need..."
Who's doing the innards swap for you?
Might be an idea to get one of Rob Storr's no-need-to-crush crush collars in there as you're building it?

I was gonna give it a go, but i'm very new to all this modding lark. I'm getting the hang of changing components but engine work and gearing frightens me as i dont know what to expect, so i will probably pay someone to do it. I wish i had someone local to me to teach and assist me for the first time.

Me too... not something I'd attempt either...
Got the number of a transmission shop darn sarf that's done a few for us over the years, will dig it out...
