Hypothetically speaking if i were to weaken away from jap 4x4's why would i be better off with a green oval?
Proper reasoned arguments please not just 'it's better so there!'

If you own a jap 4x4 it's boring. You get in,turn the key and thats it!
With a landy you need to allow extra time incase it won't start, extra time in case it breaks down, carry bus fare to get backhome. You need the daily ritual of praying to the green oval god.
Landy are like good women, tempremental but we couldn't survive without one!

You get a sense of achievement with every trip.
Taking an expedition kit and a tent isn't disproportionate to the journey... even if just to the shops for milk.
They break that often that someone else already knows the answer to your next posting "Why is my ****** broke and how do I fix it?"
You'll make a new friend in your bank manager.
You'll become a better and more attentive accountant.
You will be able to quote part numbers for UJ's and then question yourself as to why you know that and begin to doubt yourself.. check and find out you were right.
You will have no cats on your drive - the smell of EP90 will keep them away as they will think the mother of all cats lives on your patch.
What ever the weather you will feel very smug.
One will never be enough, best to carry a spare.
You will find new friends all who share an interest in shackles and tow ropes.
If your really lucky the gearbox will last more than 90 miles after purchase before giving up. (BTDTGTTS!)
You will detest the latest model until it grows on you - becomes the best motor in the world - then they produce a new model which you will detest - repeat.
Despite all it's faults you will love it to bits... despise it in bits and love it again once recompiled.
Wouldn't be without one.... or two....

Landrover-Misplaced sense of rugged indestructibility.
Jap 4x4-Sense of rugged indestructibility.
Oh yeah, and Jap stuff starts out with STRAIGHT shiny body panels :lol:

Land rovers do start out with straight body pannels, its just the factory fitted unevan half inch gaps between each pannel.
Their are a lot of fors and against, my biggest bug bear with LR is since 1970 the design on their primary off road chassis/running gear has bearly changed, I wouldn't be surpruised if 2007 defender radius arms could fit a 1970 range rover. In some respects this is a case of if it ain't bust don't fix it, however the basic design has been exceeded by other makes and LR have not bothered to stay ahead off the road.

A Land Rover isn't a car, it's a hobby. If you just want a car (ie something you get in and it drives, nearly all the time, and that's as much input as you need into the whole process), don't buy one!

The thing is too , they haven't passed on the economies of scale or the lack of spending on P&D and thus are over priced in the first place. Typical of a British car manufacturer though, even Ford hasn't managed to sort em out, maybe someone like Nissan will buy them now they're on the market, now that would be a 4x4 a Patrol/Defender hybrid.

Surely that has its good points meaning that used parts are easyier and cheaper to get because you can use things off the whole range? Either as a permanant fix or a temp fix. Rather than being over complicated and expensive as

well my series one landrover from 1957 is still going (ok i have to fix it quite often but thats half the fun) how many jap ones will still be on the road after 50 years?????

i have got jap and the oval, the oval wins everytime, you feel a sense of pride when you get into 1 :D
o ye, they probably do more to the gallon than the japs. :D

i have a jap 4x4 and i think it possessed by the green oval poltergeist!!! it keeps leeking from every possible oil/fuel place - but it is bomb proof and as yet touch wood is still going!!!!
i drive a jap for pleasure and lr for work... they are both as much fun down to what you want really

Well i've got 2 Jap and 1 defender.
Never really intended to get the defender, as the Mitsi's are just so reliable and capable.
Paj 1= 2.5 auto with rear diff lock only thing replaced in 5 yrs=rear exhaust.
Paj 2 (the off roader)= 2.5 manual lifted, striped, racked, muds,Safari snorkel etc.etc. things replaced in 2 years front discs, handbrake shoes.
No rot on either and both go through MOT every time with nothing to do!!!!
Defender 300tdi 90.
Had since May ( bought cheap) Not on road yet.
Engine been stripped and rebuilt, new crossmember fitted + other welding, new bushes to front radius arms, new brake pipe to front new rear shock mounts etc.etc. etc.
But im enjoying doing the 90 it does have character and cant wait to actually use it........
Preference????

green oval is more of a way of life - its more than a vehicle.

How about American.
My last motor was a Jeep cherokee, proper bomb proof engine! not like the v8 in my current disco. In fact the jeep was better in just about every way, an it cost a whole shed load less than the jap or british stuff.
In fairness nothing can beat a defender as a working vehicle, but [Edited] please don't buy a LR as an everyday motor. you'll regret it!

I can't convince you, a defender is a way of life, I hate being woken up by middle of the night call outs, but I climb in the 130 and by the time at the end of the street I'm grinning!
I love it cos its an everyday workhorse, that and the fact I tried Jap first and the vehicles may be indestructable but the clutches are next to useless!

Ive owned both, my 90 has character the Pajero didnt, its more interesting to drive (you can decide if thats a good or bad thing!)
It IS a closer community having a landy
80% of landys EVER made are still on the road!!!

It certainly has its advatages, but after 37 years it still has pritty much the same problems and limitations.

The reason most of us green oval drivers maintain our vehicles, is because of the age of the vehicle.
Most (I won't say all because there are some out there) of the Jap stuff is off to the scrappy inside 10 to 13 years, Landrovers keep going........
The average age of a car in the UK is 13.5 years, how many Jap machines do you really see that age compared to the green oval??
Mine is 17 years young this year, 207000 on the clock and just passed anothe MOT with no probs!! thats a no brainer for me.

I'm happy with my Terrano, Its our only car so has to be reliable. However if it was a bit of fun I was after I would consider a 90, but for everyday use I like the Nissan.

if you want something thats both reliable and good fun off road and easy to drive on the road ......
we own a vx frontera (the best one ....2.8tdi lwb) it's now 13.5 years old and still pulls like it's just off the production line ...
there are a moderate amount of "mods" and accesories available and depending on driver skills and ability darned near unstoppable

Frontys are renamed Isuzu's so no different in concept to my mav, i.e. Jap motor with euro badger.

If you dent a landy you ENHANCE its appearance. Dent anything else and it's down to the body shop :roll:

Yes 70percent of Land Rovers still on the road.
SO many more accessories/parts shop around/online!!!

I didn't know ANYTHING about engines and never did want to know anything about them untill my mum got a disco, now I'm very interested, there just so easy to work and look at, no fancy stuff even on our 98 300.
Our disco cruises at 85-90 on the motorway down to cornwall every year with all sevon seats sat on, roof box, 4 bikes and a trailer.
BTW, had ours from 115,000 miles now on 141,000miles! and NEVER had engine trouble at all! Excpet for the usual servicing which every vehicle has to go through, good ain't it! :wink:
I also agree with what was said how its a Hobbie!
