Post by: suggs on September 21, 2007, 22:36:26
on my 200tdi i always get a puff of black smoke on start up, even if its only been standing for a few miniuits, but get nothing when driving even when driving hard.

bit of a pain as got to watch out for people walking past so as not to choke them lol..

cheers

My 300 doesn't really smoke much at all unless its working very hard......  A few of my mates trucks have had the fueling tweaked and they vary from smoky to daft amounts of smoke.

To do with the compression ratio. TD5's do not smoke on start up because the compression is much higher, 200's and 300's do because the fuel pump puts more fuel in to start the engine, less compression, less efficient, puff of black smoke.

It's a sort of trade mark really.  Turn up the fuel pump a bit and you'll notice it even more.

Mine has a side exit exhaust (between passenger door & rear wheel arch) & the pump has had a tweek, so there's a hell of a cloud of black smoke when it starts. I was in a local car park the other week and could hear some chav screaming into the car park, stereo thumping, shouting, tyres screeching, trying to impress some pre-pubesent girls hanging round the shop doorway. As he screeched to a halt on my near side, he had his Nike capped head out the window giving it some with some gangsta rapper lyrics or something.

What else could I do??

 Twas very very funny (the girls thought so too!!!!)

Honestly landraver, tryng to impress 'pre-pubesent' girls with your hardcore diesel smoke cloud. You'll be folk dancing infront of the bus stop next!

The only thing better is pulling up next to them in V8. For best effect it should be done when silencer has blown apart.

Not even your 5" cherry bomb is going to make that 1.2 sound nicer than this! (or louder!)

Its soot, not smoke, as everything cools it flakes off, next start blows it out.

Your right to watch out for others, asthamatics (like me) can be very badly affected by such fine particulates, though buses left ticking over for hours until the passengers return as I see at work during the winter are a bigger problem, when they pull away having been gently filling the exhaust with carp the clouds of soot are enough to make anyone cough!

Not all soot, some of the smoke is definately unburnt diesel. Otherwise it would happen when you start up having just turned it off.

I have to make sure the front door is closed before i start the truck, otherwise i fill the hallway up from smoke!
