Hi all, Looking for your thoughts on the tyres on my 90 as they just sit proud of the arches and it's MOT time
The question is... To pass or not to pass :?:
-
Should be OK, you arent overly sticking out.
I was told you have a 1" grace not sure if thats true.
-
I've certainly seen people running around with much worse than that.
-
If it fails you get 2 weeks to sort it out and take it back within for a free re-test. So if id did fail just borrow some others off a mate or something for your re-test. AS i bet that what alot of people do.

Pass

From an SVA point of view, its not the tyre that matters as long as the wheel is covered from above by the arch/wing/extension etc.
From a motorists point of view, it can depend on what the MOT tester is like and what side of bed he got out on. Some garages get a better reputaion than others.

Like mine, Simex, plus mega offset mach 5s, plus spacers....eeeeek
Plus points...looks hard, more stable...
Negative points....Mot fail, and gets your motor filthy....
As for yours....PASS 8)
-
pass easy.
-
Passed a few MOTs with similar fit tyre. The Law states I believe that no tread is to be seen from a top view. what you can see hear is side wall or side lugs. the tread stops at the outer corner of the tyre.
-
mine is the same so i hope it will pass
-
MINE WAS LIKE THIS ON MY OLD RANGIE PASSED NO PROBLEM
-
Same as my 110 passes every year

steve mine passed and are nearly as bad as your's
it isnt testable for a mot so im lead to believe, its just down to the individual tester
how ever it is illegal on the public highway if you can see more than 1" of tread or there abouts
but it would need to be a really miserable copper with nothiing better to do, to pull you and do you for it
ive had many of police behind me with no problems with the tyres, main concern is the smoke
yours are more than ok IMO

Pass, I would appeal if a tester failed those. Oh, and the garage is under no obligation to give you a free retest for two weeks. Its a partial retest if it returns within 10 working days (so two weeks really!). If it fails on only tyres you are entitled to a free retest before the end of the next working day. Most other failures the garage can charge you up to half of the official test fee (i think £50.50 at the mo) as long as you are within the 10 days. Outside of that time its another MOT and chargeable in full.

My Vitara passed with these:

You can take the vehicle away & come back for a retest within 2 weeks FOC.

Have a look HERE (http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosacorp/repository/MOT%20Fees%20and%20Appeals%20Poster%20Nov.%2006.V1.1.pdf#xml=http://www.vosa.gov.uk/SCRIPTS/texis.exe/webinator/search/xml.txt?query=mot+retest+fee&pr=CORP&order=r&cq=&id=46f744656/)
The garage can only legally charge you a retest fee of 50% if it's a partial retest...full retest is another matter
Don't forget all MOT's are logged at a central server now so if you feel you have been charged a full test fee for a partial retest then VOSA should be able to check.

zacspeed! Yours passed with those wheels :?:
I need not worry then

Looking at the online MOT testers manual (http://www.motuk.co.uk/mcmanual_410.htm) I can't see anything about protuding tyres, so would guess that it isn't part of the test which is only a fairly limited assesment of whether the vehicle is in a reasonable condition.
Having uncovered tyres is a C&U offence though. You're probably unlikely to be stopped just for the slight protrusion of your tyres (if the things i see people getting away with is anything to go by) but there is always the possibility that it might happen.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about free retests etc, Its not down to the individual garage (well I suppose they could do them all free if they chose but most will stick to the rules). I have a fail sheet for a tyre in front of me. It says on it: All the above defect qualify this vehicle for a free retest at the same test station if : It is removed from the test centre and returned for retest before the end of the next working day OR it is left at the test station for repair and retested within 10 days.
There are not many failure items that allow even this. The only other I can think of for sure is lighting. Everthing else is a partial test within 10 days chargeable at half the full test fee (currently £50.35 on class 4). If you get charged for a full MOT within 10 days of fail, I would object loudly.

PASSED \:D/ Went straight through!! :D
