Title: 70% of all Land Rovers...
Post by: thermidorthelobster on September 23, 2007, 14:03:43
...are still on the road.

Or at least, this is what I keep hearing parrotted in the magazines and around the community.

But where did this statistic come from?  Who worked it out?  How did they do it?

I strongly suspect this is just a totally made up statistic that has now been absorbed into folklore and perpetuated by wishful thinking.

Somebody prove me wrong, go on!

Quote

Or possibly 70 per cent on the road, 29 by the road and only 1 made it home...

It's probably to do with the number of series vehicles that have been registered as scrapped.  Given how many lat emodel RRC are being broken at the momnet be specialists I think they will soon become extinct :o

But we all know of a rotting hulk that used to be a series lying disgracefully neglected somewhere that probably still has a logbook, don't we?

I'm inclined towards the recycled aspect.....

Lets face it, even once its been written off, it still has a value, you only have to look at the amount of parts on Eblag to realise it! very few other motors have this.

Add in all the trialers and modified specials that are around as well you can see the reason for this.

Also take the former colonies into this as well, there were massive amounts exported to africa, the carribean, south america and india who all take recycleing to a level WAY above us

So I think that a more accurate statement would be

"70% of all landrovers are still on the road in some way shape of form!!"

Or "70% of all bits of Land Rovers are still on the road".  This sounds a bit more realistic...  but then all those OEM & pattern spare parts that are sold must be replacing stuff which is being gotten rid of, so I'm still not convinced!

I'd be interested to know what the median age of a Defender / Disco / RRC / P38 / Tempest / L322 is.  I'm assuming the new ones aren't going to last as long as the old ones, but it would be nice to see.
