April this year, the steering box started to leak big time on my 200tdi... so, got a recon one from Paddocks..... 200 miles later, that one sprubg a leak, so, returned it, and got a replacement.....
Another 500 miles later, the second one blew the bottom seal clean out of the box..... so, called paddocks, who put me on to their supplier..... they agreed to replace the box again, but said that i must have a problem with the pump..... so, i threw a new pump at it aswell to elliminate that problem..... they did say that due to the fact that there must be an issue with my vehicle, that they would not replace the box again...
Now, the first twice i replaced the box, i did not bleed the fluid out of the bleed valve on the top of the box, the third time i did..... now then, the box is yet again leaking, but this time from the join between the box itself, and the square lid that the bleed nipple is in.....
What's going on............. i'm getting <edit> (http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=42831) off with changing box's..... as you can imagine, so for now i have undone that bleed valve, and forced a load of air into the box to reduce the fluid level...... then turned the wheels l-r-l-r to bleed it as i did the first twice....
Have i done something really stupid..?? (apart from buy a land rover...)
Or....
Are these boxes just cr4p..........
or....
does everyone just put up with them leaking....
Your thoughts please..........
All i want is to be able to park on my driveway without leaving steering fluid all over it..!!!
Oh, and would big tyres have any part in my troubles...????

Perhaps check that you don't have an internally delaminating hose that is causes a pressure build up in the box; such that the fluid can't return to the reservoir.
Big tyres should only be an issue if you are going from lock to lock in deep mud......then I would expect you'd boil the PAS fluid and the pump would begin to whine, plus your steering would get heavier.

Trouble is, the only way i'd know about the pipe is to replace the return feed eh......

Quite honestly I'd try a second hand steering box from a scrapper you know to be OK. The big tyres won't help but the internal pressure is regulated by the PAS pump.
I'd expect with no hands on the wheel that ther pump and belt be quiet, when you haul the wheel to one side the pump or belt will make more noise, this is normal and if you haul it all the way to the bump stops it makes a fair bit of noise, again normal.
At rest with the engine running I can see the fluid circulating back into the reservoir.

Well, i've just had another look at it, and with the engine at idle, there is definate movement of fluid coming from the cap on top of the box, the square plate with the 4 bolts on it....... so somehow i would imagine that there's too much pressure somewhere........ i'm not having much luck thats for sure..... tempted to just sell the damn truck and buy something japenese......

just an idea , but is there a pressure release valve on the pump. if there is it could be faulty causing increased pressure.

Yes there is, hence why i put a new pump on at the same time as the last steering box.....
Anyone want a well kitted out disco, with leaky steering box and a rattle somewhere inside that driving me bl00dy crazy.....
Is there anything between the headlining a roof that could rattle..????

Just been poking around up there on mine and yes...LOTS
I had a rattle up there, turned out to be a busted sun visor clip but theres a wiring harness goes up on the passenger side in the a pillar. Maybe thats come adrift in the roof?

Maybe.... but i'd be fairly sure the rattle is right behind my ear when i'm driving...... i suspect it might be the interior light wire...... i might try taking the light out, and pulling on the wire, then drive the truck to see if the rattle changes......

Just changed the return pipe, nothing was blocked..... still seams to be leaking, i took the top off the box, and the seal in there is massive...... what is wrong with the damn thing.....
