Title: Canvas Top
Post by: BigSi on September 30, 2007, 14:11:56
After a bit of ‘umming’ and ‘erring’, decided against fitting an Ifor Williams truck top to the back of the 90. Decided that I prefer the look of a canvas back, plus it could be removed as and when required (also would fit better around the roll cage). Had a good study of a friends canvas top, and doesn't look that hard to replicate.

Now that I’ve decide what to fit, the next question is how to fit! Do I buy one already made and alter it, or have one made to my specification (know somebody who makes and repairs canvas tents), to accommodate the roll cage arms sweeping from around the cab.

Plus, how does it fix to the back of the truck cab? If anybody has any pics, it would be much appreciated (fancy design my own, depending on cost). Can I just use normal canvas (ie same as tents), or is there a special type?

You want to use UV stable (resistant) canvas.  Sailmakers should be able to help you there
Personally I would get some hoop sticks, adapt to fit as appropriate, & then either have new hood made or modify an existing one.  I am sure Exmoor Trim (http://www.exmoortrim.co.uk/erol.html/)  will be able to help you with sticks & bespoke hood.
Fitting on the truck goes from press studs to hooks...

Thanks for the info.

Going to have a crack at making my own sticks! Planning to use some electrical galvanised conduit and a bender. I can use my friends sticks as a template.  :)  :)  :)  :)

Had a play with a friends canvas top from a lightweight, just to see what it would look like (a little tight in places)? Thinking with going with sand or light brown?

What do you think, better than an Ifor Williams truck top?

i think you have made the right choice with a soft top rather than a ifor, there easier to take off when needed and not exactly hard to store

Just bought a brand new (was on a new Land rover for a few hours until the ifor Williams top was fitted), fawn canvas top, fixings, and a complete set of hood sticks for £200. Good price?  :-k  :-k  :-k  :-k

Spent today fitting the new canvas (despite the rain!)

Still got to do some stitching where the roll cage enters, so at the moment Duck Tape is keeping the corners together.

Has anybody got any pics of how the rear canvas fixes to the truck-cab inside? It’s a body fit but unfortunately got the kit for a cab fit.

if you have a pick-up canvas, you should have got 2 pieces of metal strip..1 fits to the back of the truck cab, and the other slots in side the canvas..the one that slots into the little pockets in the canvas is fixed in with those screw type clips..This holds the thing down..can sort out pics tomorrow if ya need em...

I’ve got the metal angle strip that slots in side of the canvas, and four hood insert retaining twist clip’s’. I’ve also got four spring plate things (for twist clip to locate into). Seems like I’m missing the metal strip that fixes to the back of the truck-cab.

Any pics would be most appreciated!  :D  :D  :D  :D
