I'm off to New York at the end of October for 5 days.
Was thinking of getting some cheap gear whilst there.
1. Garmin GPS
2. Garmin GPS Plotter & echo sounder for boat...or really deep wading
3.Clothes
4.Kids Xmas pressies
What bargains have you all had from the states & what should I look out for & most of all avoid

Hi,
strange as it may seem - hinself swears by the undies & socks from Walmart - reckons they last twice as long! clothes are a good buy, and whilst in canada 3 years ago we bought the kids a bike each, cost us half of what they would have cost here and we got the tax back too! (only claim up to £400 of purchases tho' as that is all you are allowed to bring in tax free) toys are a good buy depending on the age of kids, but watch out for dvds as they will be the wrong zone and will not play on a british dvd player. a friend gave me a garmin etrex venture that he paid $50 dollars for and did not want!
just some suggestions - besides which have loads of fun!
i have to say i do not know why we accept the high prices that we are charged here - economies of scale indicate we should pay a lot less - but most people don't argue, they just pay. i however haggle for everything - it is rare that i pay full price for anything.
regards
ela

Reloading gear, my mate regularly brings back that sort of stuff and makes a small fortune out of selling his year old gear (to other licenced shooters), got me a Lee-Loader for 30-30 Win less than a 1/3 the cost here if you could find it here that is....

HI
Fantastic place - you'll have a brilliant time.
Clothes are an excellent buy - excellent prizes at Macys and Century 21 (but that is a bit like TK Maxx - you have to hunt for bargains.)
If you have time go on the Staten Island ferry - it is free - and gives a great view of the Statue of Liberty.
Also - have a meal at the Marriott in Times Square - it is reasonably priced and the view is amazing - a revolving restaurant.
Have a lovely holiday - I'm really jealous - would love to go back.

Hi Lorraine
Many thanks for the tips.
The Marriott is on the list of things to do...will try & fit the ferry in though.
I have no urge to go to states, we are only going because SWMBO has to go for a works conference, so it's going to be busy
Looks like I am going to need a holiday to get over it
Cheers

about DVD's it is possible with a quick scower of the internet to get the code for the dvd player to make it multi region, also means you can play copies if it does not already (obviously i would not condone copies as they are illigal  ) i did this to my dvd, and it worked, easy to do :D
-
or even just buy a multi region dvd player??
-
or do that :)
i was just on about if you already have a dvd and cant be bothered to buy another one

Cheetoes.
WaveyDave knows my position on them, and I've run out again :( Time for another food parcel :)
Cheapest thing I've purchased compared to here
erm, everything, including a house :)

Watch out for customs on the way back, don't remember what the limit is for bringing stuff back from none EU countries but its surprisingly low.

Just looked it up, you are only allowed £145 of goods other than cigs/booze/perfume etc.

rip all the price tags off everything and put them with the receipts in the post before you fly home. that way at customs when they ask about the goods they a) cant prove theyre new, and b) cant prove how much they cost.

Definate for clothes, denims, Tshirts, trainers, Timberland boots etc
get to Wallmart, they are great for all sorts especially a Leatherman or Gerber multitool, I paid $30.00 for my last gerber in there!!
"BIG DOG" T shirts are great value and VERY funny, I have loads!! but not sure if you will get one in New York??
Do your research on electrical goods before you go so you know what to pay.
DVD's great value, just get a multi region player off ebay!! I have also bought a car DVD player in Wallmart for $60 which of course runs off the cars 12Volt system so no worries about power supply.
Have a great trip, I must admit that before I went for the 1st time I thought that Americans were loud, brash and arrogant, but I have NEVER actually found them like that, I have always found them very friendly and helpful.

Spyderco's Spyderench (now Byrdrench) would be worth getting, mines 5 years old, and apart from the pocket clip failing the only damage was the blade tip snapping, due to me mis-using it! Here they were £90+ current recommended price in the US is $99, worth EVERY penny, IMHO.

bit of advise if you are planning on getting a boat GPS from the states is get one that has the correct area of base map
