In the hypothetical situation that I ask Mrs Thelobster for a console for xmas, which one should I ask for?
I'm leaning towards PS3 because of the blu-ray player, and the graphics look good.
However, I've heard nothing but good stuff about Wiis, mainly because of the gameplay. And they're much cheaper. But no blu-ray player.
I wouldn't touch an X-Box with a bargepole because it's made by Microsoft. No more than I'd visit a butcher run by Hannibal Lecter.
Any recommendations, preferably from somebody who has tried / owned both?

Sorry, but I'd rather smash my head repeatedly against a concrete wall than waste more of my life on something that's come from Microsoft

If you want online gaming, high quality graphics, and it's for you, then the PS3. Especial for first person shooter type games.
If you have a family, want it to have a laugh with your mates, enjoy the "old" games and so on, and not that fussed about really hi res graphics, then the Wii... Also, if you want to get fit, have arm ache for a few days too ;) tennis, bowling and boxing are good for building up your drinking arm ;)
We got the Wii.

Played with my mate’s Wii last week. Unfortunately I got thrashed by a 14 year old girl on one of the Boxing games!!!! Something that I’m not proud off, so lets keep it our little secret!!!

Not got either, but the wii looks far more fun. Who needs the very lates up to the nonosecond graphics if your having fun?
-
Xbox360 despite it being MS.

I prefere the Xbox to the Sony version's
The PS3 looks brill but is soooo expensive
The Wii looks the most fun
Halo 3 swings it back to the Xbox for me

There is indeed, but also I think they're dropping the current base model to £350 - larger drive and without the limitations.
-
it all depends on what you want out of it
the guys in work have one (bout 5 of them in our dept) and they only play two games
warhawk
motorstorm
must say thats a lot of money spent on two games :)
i was in makro yesterday and saw a demo of a formula 1 game (dunno the name of it) on a ps3 where the camera was focused on the driver and as he drove round the track the reflections in his visor and the surrounding bodywork was stunning
still cant afford one though!

We've got an XBox360 and Wii. The joy of the Wii is the controllers which bring a whole new angle to gaming, also as it's not as highly powered as the competition they have clearly gone back to basics and spent time on the game play and not wasted coding effort on the latest photo realistic graphics.
So the Wii gets all the use now and the XBox only gets played occasionally. Mind you the carpet is taking a right hammering with all the jumping about in front of the TV!

i "bought" two old games last night, super mario world for the snes and super mario 64 for the n64

Wii, if you want a more physical interaction.
For general gaming, then Xbox 360 and Halo 3. Wether you like Microsoft or not.
