my rangie that has a viscous type diff lock transfer box is starting to make a horrible clanking sound almost like teeth jumping sound when it's under heavy stress ...ie pulling away sometimes for a couple of seconds but a lot worse if attempting a hill climb ,,,,thing is ,,would it be the transfer box or front diff thats the problem...to be honest it does sound transfer box to front end area...if it is transfer box would it be complete box removal or can the insides be swapped in situ....
-
Starting point for me would be to check all the bushes... then the UJ's on the props...
But if your certain it's coming from the Tx box it could be the chain or cogs inside are on their way out.
In which case, it's replace or rebuild I'm afraid.

:( Sounds like the viscous unit may be seized and forcing the chain over the sprockets ?
Jack one front wheel up and try and turn it, if you can't likely it's seized. Details of how to change it are on Ashcroft's site. But you could change to a normal LT230 for less cost ! See post above.

yeah,it does make that sort of sound. :( i got a spare transfer box .looks like my job for the weekend is sorted then :(
is it a complete t/box swap or can the insides be replaced in situ then

If it's just a seized viscous you can change that insitu without taking the box out, support the box and take the front prop off and the bit with the viscous unit off, 8 bolts I think, it has the gearbox mount attached. Unbolt the unit, new one in and replace.
Otherwise look at the links on the post above changing a BW is very similar.

SOunds like the chain is jumping, it happens on badly worn units, apparently, never seen one.
The amount of damage it takes to cause this would suggest a replacement box though.

well changed the transfer box and it's a job well done ..all sorted now ..good call you chaps...thanks

  It's nice to hear that it was something others have diagnosed correctly, I have bought another Rangie with a bust transfer so have that to change as well now !!! That one has been driven till all drive went, just hoping it's the transfer that's gone and not the splines on the main box, fingers and toes crossed.
