Title: Rivetting!!
Post by: Dirty Gertie on January 08, 2005, 19:28:38
I went to a local fasteners supply co, the other day to buy some rivets, asked for 5 or 6mm ones, explaining that they were  for rivetting my chequerplate floor back in, having had to drill some out and centrepunch others, which had enlarged the holes just that tad too big for the 4mm rivets I'd got, so I really wasn't fussed that much, as long as they squash up bigger than 4mm.
I was told, "we haven't got any, but  I can get you some for tomorrow, they'll be expensive mind"
I asked how much for 50, he replied "Oh about £9.00"
"NINE QUID FOR 50 RIVETS?????" said I
"What are they for?" says he,

ERM,........

I explained again. (maybe hard of hearing/ didn't understand what I meant/ thought I was making it up...)

Oh right, says he, disappears into the racking, and reappears with a box of large-flange rivets, holding one up like the holy grail

"How about these??" he asked, quite triumphant

They'll do nicely I said.
He counted out my rivets, I paid (MUCH less than £9!!) and left.

Bloke in fastners shop listening to what customer says the first time - PRICELESS!!!!!

Its an old trick listen to what the customer wants, then get them to repeat question
and while you repeat question ther'er working out how much they can rip you off for.

funnily enough, though, he counted out 50 for me, when I got home I counted 'em, and I've ended up with 60

i remember when i used to work with my old man he would sell TEX screws (kind of like rivets but they had drill bits on the end and also a thread to hold it in place like a screw i would imagine

works wonders and also means you can unscrews them if you so wish

dont see them about though these days

Know the ones you mean we have a few boxes of TEX screws left over at work from when they fitted the mezzanine in the warehouse.
Very handy little invention but bloody hurts when you hit your head on the dril bit part sticking out the other side
