Title: How to improve economy ?
Post by: Kenny on October 13, 2007, 10:02:10
Well I'm afraid to say unless I can improve this the old faithful will have to go. Discovery now gone so will be a no land rover family :(

I have a 2.5 NA 90 / 1989 and the economy is lets say cr.., sorry I mean rubbish. Is there any way this can be improved. How about putting a transit engine in, would it help ?

TIA

Damian

Depends on what you mean by "cra...."

the 2.5 N/A we used to have did around the high twenties to early thirties on a good day, a 200 or 300 tdi should return the same...

As daz said the 90 n/a i have is good on fuel "for what it is". I am just putting a 200 tdi in as we speak but don't think it will be as good on fuel.

What are you getting out of it? could be somthing wrong

35 quid lasts about 150 miles so a very quick/rough calculation puts that at about 19 to the gallon.

If it's being used around town alot, or in hilly areas, you may find the mpg drops to this. If you use it more on open roads, it should be 25-30 mpg, I reckon. I'm getting about 28mpg from my 2.5TD 90.

You can also get LPG kits that release more kilowatts from your fuel, more power or economy.

If you want a Transit engine, give me a shout I may be able to find you one.

My 1985 C reg NA was absolutey fantastic on fuel, infact better thn my td5, i reckon 30 and upto 35 on a run,it was a brilliant engine, not too fast but gruntish, solid and reliable. Try running it on cooking oil, they run well on it just mix some diesel this time of year, helps to keeps the density of the fuel correct and eases starting in the morning.

Better to use new oil, less free fatty acids which are bad news.

A blend of Kerosene, Veg oil and derv is a good substitute this time of year, veg oil can be a probelm in a cold engine, it condenses and gets past the rings into the oil.
