Been to cannock chase today with bofa 4x4 (quality day out - highly recommended). Anyway, there was a patch where my clutch threw a wobbler. There was loads of free play in the peddle and the biting point was the moment the pedal left the floor. It was really hard to get gears, couldnt get any at tickover. Anyway, being in the middle of the forest I got it into low 2nd and carried on.
It seemed to sort itself out after a while. I got all my gears back and quite a high biting point. Anyway, I made the 80 odd mile trip home and just as I came off the motorway the clutch started to slip. Its not too bad at the mo, only slipping in higher gears and as you change. Just feels like a worn out clutch to me but it went bloddy quick. Its only with its weird episode earlier on that I have some vague hope of it being something else.
Any guesses anyone? If its a clutch, how big a job is it?? :( bloody land rovers.

Forgot to add, the disco has gone. This is a 110 2.5 petrol f reg. Its about time I update my avatar!

The clutch on my 90 went without any warning, one minute it was fine the next I was crunching gears.
The year before that the slave cylinder went and that caused a low biting point.
-
I had a slave cylinder go on a series 3 before, this felt exactly like that but fluid level seemed fine and then it just we t ok again. Weird.
Now it definately seems warn out. Anyone any idea how many hours are involved?
-
It depends if you take the engine out or slide the gearbox back. How difficult it is removing the floor plates makes a big difference to how long it takes to do the job, as the bolts/screws can be seized and be a swine to get out, and there's bluddy loads of them! :(
You should be able to get it done in a day or weekend if you take your time. What gearbox have you got? If it's the LT77/R380, then replace the clutch fork with a reinforced item.

Me and a mate took the box out for a series 3 one. Getting the floor out was the slowest bit. If its engine out, its gotta be a TDI going back in dont you think?
Bloody thing, ive used it offroad once and I am stuck with this nitemare...

Check botht he master and slave cylinders, biting point on the floor suggests air in the cylinder or clutch fork damage.
-
Yeah, thats what I thought but its odd. Fluid level on the max line. No leaks. Also, it now feels completely normal apart from the fact that it is in the very early stages of slipping. I work in a garage and am used to driving cars with problems. It slips only in 5th at the mo, although wants to slip when you change gear. It really does feel just like a warn clutch. I checked the slave cylinder, a mate suggested the rod may be out of place on the piston, all seems dry and fine.
Reckon its a clutch, even though I cant explain the other issue. I bought a new clutch and fork today, gonna give it a shot on sunday....
-
If the master leaks it goes down the carpet, but then like you say a slipping clutch is easy to detect, maybe you'll find the answer once you get it apart but whilst you are there a new clutch is a no-brainer anyway.
-
well the clutch was seriously warn out. Still no idea about the other problem though! Suppose I will just have to wait and see if it happens again. I am suprised how well it was still driving really considering just how warn it was.

Jeez...have you scored the flywheel?
-
a little but its not bad. At least its over now. I have to say, I dont want to fit another one of them in a hurry!
I welded a plate onto the back of a new clutch fork as well as advised by a local landy specialist. He reckons he does it to all of em as they are prone to failure?

Out of curiosity how many miles on that very worn out clutch plate? My 110 is up to 127000 on original clutch and I can't believe it can go on much longer..........!! A
