I took my cylinder head off today and discovered my rocker shaft is in three peices. It has snapped in the middle and at the front pedestal. Has any one seen this before? What would have caused it? And how come the engine ran fine like that? Will I be ok just buying a new shaft and swapping all the components over?

dont no the cause, and ive never heard of any storys of it before :?
but aslong as all the rockers are fine with no cracks or hairline cracks, and the oilways are nice and clear
tappets are all ok with no abnormal ware or uneven ware
springs are all ok
just fit a new shaft and it should be ok

I've heard of one breaking in two - but again the reason for it was not known. I would check the rockers and pads for excessive wear as the oil pressure/feed would be lower the further along the shaft.

Busted timing belt?

Busted timing belt?
If that was the case I'd have some bent push rods and an engine that didn't run...Mine was running fine till I took it apart and found the broken rocker shaft. In case you're wondering I took it apart to extract the snapped off end of a glow plug that was stuck solid.

a bust cambelt in the past could have caused it
cracked the shaft
then its broken over time

good point Dan, I hadn't thought of it like that

Anyway, how did you get the glow plug out? I'm asking becasue I have to do one now

i get them out by getting the engine stonking hot
if that fails then off with the head
silicone a pop bottle to the stubborn plugs cylinder
then tip a bit o derv in and leave overnight
then if all else fails
air gun it which dont like doing

I think it's past most of that, though I've found WD40 dissolves combustion deposits harmlessly and I was thinking of sticking the head in the oven for an hour, but RRRs new motor had one snapped off in the head and as the gasket has just gone the glowplug would have to come out to get the head skimmed.
Anyway, what with time constraints, unknown history, the glow plug and not actually knowing what caused the gasket to go I had a mad moment and bought a new head.
Oh and a new glowplug

A mate of mine had his rocker shaft snap on his 200tdi. Don't know the cause, he fitted a new one & it worked fine from then on :?

Once the head was off I got the remains of the glow plug out easily. I just used a punch and hammer on the end. It didn't take much effort to shift it.
