Why have google ads been put on the main events page?
-
Might be a way of generating some money :?: So much per click :?:
-
They were added for a couple of reasons.
First off, to see how long it would take before anyone noticed/commented/objected. (They went up on Friday so it took 2 days ;-) )
Second to see if they could be used as a viable way to raise some extra revenue for the club / charity.
They are Pay Per Click as Andy guessed, so the club gets a couple of pence for each time they are visited.
We're going to trial it for a bit to see what the response is like. We put them on the portal pages so that they aren't 'in your face' all the time when using the forum, but in a part of the portal which gets a fair amount of traffic.

Personally, I'm pro-adverts on free web sites - as long as they
are reasonable and don't get in the way too much, especially
now that broadband is so prevalent. I even click on them when something
interesting catches my eye.
Hopefully it will be a success!

How about doing something like the 'Most Members Online' a couple of months back. Pick a night and time and get all online members to click the links if it raises dosh for club/charity :?: - just a thought
-
The system does a certain amount of checking, such that you can't just sit there and click links :-(
Generally speaking, I would say that if you see something you think might be interesting, click on a link... if you see the ads and think about it, click a link and we'll see how things progress from there.
