Title: Whisky, whisky...
Post by: L90OOK on October 19, 2007, 23:22:08
...so good they named it twice.

Since going to Norway this summer I have a new found taste for whisky.
Now, I have drunk my fair share & more but never really liked whisky...especially having been very ill on it on my 18th birthday.  However, I gave a bottle of Old Pulteney (http://www.oldpulteney.com/liqueur.html) to a friend in Norway for his 60th birthday & shared a few tipples.  Now...I still don't like allot of whiskies but love Old Pulteney & can happily drink a few others...
Can anyone recommend so others I should try?

Ah, but adding water brings out the flavours...  We stayed in a distillery near Aberdeen a few years ago (before I gave up alcohol) and they convinced me of the idea of mixing water with your whisky.

The only downside is, if it's a yuck whisky, it lasts even longer with water :x

I'm actually a bit partial to Jamiesons.  Prefer it to any of the Scotches.

O.K., I'm biased, but stick with Scotch Whisky, there are plenty to try, Old Pulteney is distilled in Wick which is Scotland's most northerly mainland distillery.

I prefer 12 year old single malts to blends. I like the Speyside whiskies, particularly Aberlour and Balvenie, I'm sure you will have heard of Glen Grant, Glenfiddich etc. Over half of Scotland's distilleries are in this region with three main flavours.

The Central Highlands produce quite a lot of blends, their malts (such as Dalwhinnie) are sweeter and more 'heathery'.

I find the Islay malts such as Laphroaig a bit too 'peaty' for my taste, although I recently bought a bottle of Tobermory (from Mull) which was very smooth and drinkable.

The supermarkets frequently have malts 'on offer' (the Tobermory was £15 in Morrisons) keep your eyes open and slowly built up a collection, I usually buy one a month and keep about 10 different bottles on the go.

Drink it slowly and straight, although a little water is acceptable. Great with a few friends after a meal, get the bottles out and have a tasting session.

I lovvve my Scotch Whiskey,
Start with the cheap single malts and take it from there, dont give up because one is not to your taste, there will be another next to it you will Saviour.

My Dad acquired a 2 liter bottle of whiskey about ten years ago and so did his friend.
His friend moved to NZ and took the bottle with him, he emailed my Dad a couple of years ago saying he had sold his bottle for £3000

My Dad was gutted, he drank his with Adas cola

Ive only ever bought him Grants since   the philistine      cola come on , neat or nothing

My personal favourite is Dalwhinnie. I have gone through a few bottles of that stuff.

Glenlivet is also a particularly enjoyable drink. However, I ended up in the local casualty because of that one, and it has taken me the last 18 months to be able to stomach the smell and taste of whisky once again. I opened a bottle of Glenlivet, and rather unintentionally, 2 hours later it was empty. I was found several hours later unconscious on the bathroom floor, not in a pretty state, nor was the floor for that matter. Ah well, you live and learn! So currently my tipple of choice is Jamaican rum ;)

Sounds like divine justice to me!  Some distant relatives of mine are sent a Fortnum & Masons hamper every year with a decent bottle of red wine.  They drink the wine with lemonade because they don't care for it much  :x

I don't do scottish single malts but I do do Jamie's ohh very nice. The icing on the cake is a Bourbon JD, wild turkey, Jim Beam or a nice Cognac, , hmm, salivering in work

Ever tried JD single barrel or JD silver select single barrel - very very very nice  8)

adding ice is for two reasons, first reason is it weakens the taste slightly if you don't like the sharpness of most whisky's

and more importantly, there's actually a chemical compound in malt whiskey that reacts with water and actually increases the taste of the malt. the adding of ice will not seriously effect the ABR percentage.

Frank Sinatra once asked for "Sipping Whiskey" (aka Jack Daniels), when the orderly asked why it was called "sipping whiskey" he replied "well you try [ahem] drinking it"

Hmm, well in theory, they are but they are not, it is a sour mash but this doesn't mean its not a whisky, sour mash is a form of whisky, the green label JD attached shows it stating its still a whisky.

Taken from my JD private collection, never to be opened....well, one day maybe !!

It's a form, but very different.

Each has its merits :) I love both - but prefer a good malt!

Jack Daniels is a whiskey, not a whisky - did you spot the difference :?:

During one of our (many, hic) distillery tours, we were advised not to use ice as this 'closes the aromas.' Water is fine, preferably soft and definately not carbonated, some whiskies can take more water than others.

I've got a blurb on whisky tasting somewhere, can't find it at the moment.

But, let's not be snobby, if you like it drink it :D

Old Pulteney is a favourite of mine.  If you like that I can recommend Clynelish, another distillery on the north-eastern coast.  If you can find it, Brora is fantastic stuff.  It came from the same distillery as Clynelish.

If you go to a decent merchant you can usually get independently bottled whisky.  Gordon & MacPhail do a range labelled Connoisseurs' Choice.  There are some great whiskies and also rare and unusual bottlings.  Try also to get it at cask strength; commercial whisky is usually bottled at 40% (for tax reasons IIRC); cask strength is considerably stronger so dilutes better.  If you want to be a purist use bottled (Highland?) water, not the foul-tasting stuff that we get out of the tap.

Got to be Jack Daniels Single Barrel, ain't nowt better. Closely followed by JD old no'7. No ice, just as it comes from the bottle.

FYI. Jack Daniels Oak barrels are only used once in the whiskey making process, b4 they lose the unique flavour. Then some are sold in the gift shop for $40 (i bought one, it's now my coffee table). But 95% are exported and sold to scotish whiskey makers to make scotch in. Think about that next time your drinking your McWhiskey, there's a little bit of redneck in there somwhere. YeHaaaaaaaaa!

Single Malts are the only one to have, I call all the blended stuff "cooking whisky"

For everyday, things like Glenmorangie and GlenFiddich are good and easily got as is The glenlivet, for something a bit more special go to Bunnabhain or Sheep dip. Both are very nice. I too find ones like the Islay malts a bit to peaty as well.

My personal favourite is the bottle of "The Macfarlane" single malt that I bought for my daughters christening 6 years ago (I am a Macfarlane so makes it MINE!!!)

generally equal amounts of water and whisky is the "correct" way, but i say enjoy it the way you like it (as long as your not adding crap like coke) I find when in England I use chilled bottled water, but in wales I can use from the tap

If, like me, you like the Islay malts - then try the blend Black Bottle, it's a blend of Islay malts and is a great drinkin' whisky.

A couple of years ago, my brother went to Alabama on business and brought me back a jar of 'moonshine' and some chewing tobacco. The shine was very interesting and I swear that I could have run my car on it. Quite an aquired taste, which needless to say I aquired quite quickly :D
As for the chewing baccy :-& Never again!
I know it is not a whisky, but my favourite spirit is Pussers Navy Rum. When I was a young teen, my dear father (RIP), an ex matlow, thought it would be a good idea to give me a shot of that to get rid of the sore throat I had. It got rid of it, it also broke my voice and I was talking like Barry White for a fortnight!

Mount Gay Rum is my favourite.
Moonshine from Ireland (pootchi, or something like that) will put hares on your chest.

...back to whisky I have tried the OBAN variety tonight...not bad.  Am going off to have a whisky night with a mate next week  :D ...will report back if I can remember what I like
