Weld?
Borrowed a non-gas mig welder from work - a WolfTurbo Mig 100! had a quick go and managed to get a few good runs.........
Thing is i got a front outrigger to do on my series - do i give it a go?
-
If you are like me, you won't settle til you've tried it out.
-
Well had a go at welding the base plate of out rigger to a piece of 1/4 inch scrap and got a good joint. Ground it off and cleaned all the surface up........ think tomorrow may be the day to give it ago!

With a proper welder, you will find it a lot easier.
No gas is really difficult in comparison to using a gas mig
Have a practise and when you think you done a good weld- destroy it  If it wont break its a good one :D

Well have had a look on line today and found a nice Little SIP welder for £150 - borrowed this one and to be honest with the amount im going to do i can't justify buying one.
Had a go like i said at welding the base plat of the out rigger onto some scrap and it wouldnt budge, had to grinde it off and square the base plate up again....... fortunantly the series outriggers come with an oversized base plate!
-
dont go for the SIP there poo
go for a clarke or sealey, the higher amperage the better 8)
-
well i gave it ago - and suprised myself. New front out rigger now fitted! Its not that bad once you get use to your welder!

set the power half way up the scale Point the welder at a bit of scrap then close your eyes and pull the trigger.
as it is welding play with the wire feed until it sounds like bacon under the grill thats when the power/wire balance is just right. if it blows through turn the power down a bit and redo the feed setting with your eyes shut using the sound to get it right if you think it will handle more heat then wack it up a bit etc.
This was the first advice given to me on starting my new job as a welder 6 years ago and it works.
Make sure all the surfaces are clean metal and don't weld galv as it will make you sick

There's a lot more technical ways to explain it but the description above is pretty good :)
I did a small amount of welding at home then went on a welding course at work (using big fancy MiG welders) got my BS certificate now :D , doesn't mean i'm that much better at it though lol.
Just keep practising!

got to try one of these fancy lectric welders one day- im still on my oxy acetaline set up and im too scared to move from them :)

Hello,
I am nearly summoning up the courage to give it a go but a few good sources of info are.
http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/
A site not unlike this, but for welding people, reviews, tutorials and forums.
The "A 4x4 is born video" has a good section on welding (and is a bloody great DVD anyway!, buy it)
Some welding shops have demo videos and tutorials, I got one free form the nice chap at my local BOC outlet)
If its Chassis stuff (like I need on my S3) then you need a BIG welder likley over 200amps and skill to do it. I think ill get that done by a pro at a garrage with hi spec kit.
Bulkhead should be easier, but you need a welder that goes LOW enough so it wont bow a hole through it (suy 30amps or less)
Avoid NO GAS stuff as it give a rubbish finish and is allegedly toxic!
but www.mig-welding.co.uk is the palce to start.
good luck!

set the power half way up the scale Point the welder at a bit of scrap then close your eyes and pull the trigger.
EErrrrr NO [-X ....... PUT YOUR MASK ON
Arc eye can be painfull and closing your eyes will not always work
As for the rest of the advice =D> =D> Nicely put

A friend did some welding for me without a mask and ended up with very sun burnt eye lids, needless to say he'll never do it again.

I have a very low rated no gas mig welder and a borrowed gas mig welder (thanks Jeff) which is superb, but having seen a stick arc welder in action... I may get one
-
 sorry guys but I meant it as in don't look at the weld at all with or without a mask just concentrate on the sound
oh and safety first
