i remember a wile ago some one mentiond a cheep diy store plug that fits can anyone tel me the size and where i can find them please

Try your local dealer ... they ain't that much (have you checked that yours are not still screwed into the stowage points on your vehicle....)

It depends on the vehicle, the V8 at home has one screwed into a blind hole for storage next to the drain hole, where as the VM doesn't (OK so not a disco engine but you get the meaning that the arn't all neciserrily the same).

are they 3/8" bsp , like a gas fitting ?. alan....

Yes!
You can get 3/8" brass plugs from a plumbing shop for less than that and they do the job just as well.
