Title: what a weekend

it all started so well..... a night run with plcuk on salisbury plains on saturday night. all was going well until we hit the tarmac to head for home..... 4th gear just below 3000rpm and just about to snatch 5th gear and...................


red lights on dash come on fast.....no power and engine dies....this is at 1am,

so coast over to the side of the A303. a quick inspection and we found that the cambelt had let go :?  :oops:  :cry:  :cry:  :cry:  :cry: ...


so mule ( thanks mate ) pulled me down to the services as it was safer there than on the side of the a303. at 5 am the recovery truck dropped the disco around the corner as he couldnt get it down my road......it sat there all day yesterday looking very sad.....


last night i put a few bids in on discoveries....well i won one  :shock:  i will be off to collect an 1994 v8 efi discovery auto soon with any luck. its been proper rollar coster weekend i can tell you. i am going to pop the cover off the 200di at the weekend and have a proper look inside.....fingers crossed its not terminal

here's the new toy/ beast .....now got to think of a name

Sorry to hear that Denviks!

Popped the cambelt on my 200 and all it did was bend 4 push rods, so fingers crossed and good luck.

Still waiting for my cambelt to get done, so dont know the extent of the damage!

The v8i looks nice enough though :D

funny that all this cambelt business.
last night driving about 6pm listening to the F1 on 5 live, just going up the A3 and pop, lost all power in the poooosat (this car done 145K) i knew exactly what happend... cambelt. i rings up the AA tell them what happend tell them to bring a recovery truck cos its not repairable... anyway, the police then stopped by th side of the road, and made a rolling road block while the cop recovered me to the nearest lay by...

anyway.... the engine has gone to see how much damage has happend... (wa going 75mph  :shock:  :shock:  :shock: ) i fear a lot!

OHC on yours mate. IIRC you'll be looking at vlaces and rockers. I dont think they eat the pistons though.

Over Head Cam

On the LR engines (200 and probobly 300)Tdi the camshaft is in the block. Pushrods ride against the camshaft lobes and these go up the side of the engine. As the rod goes up, it pushes its side of the rocker up withc rocks (unsurprisingly) and pushes the valve down. When the belt breaks and a valve sticks down, most of the time the impact of the piston hitting the valve is transferred to the long bendy pushrood, which bends. Sometimes the valves do too.

In order to keep valvetrain weight down manufactueres went for overhead cams, less weight means faster, more agressive openings and less tendancy to overshoot. On SOHC (Single OverHead Cam) engines like yours, the camshaft is in the cylinder head and runs down the middle. The camshaft acts directly on the rockers which act on the valves without a long bendy bit of metal in between. The result when the piston slams into the cylinders is lots of kinetic force and no-where to go. The valves normally bend or one side of the rocker just snaps off. On a petrol engine with light alloy pistons you might be at risk of punching a hole in the piston too.

DOHC (Double Overhead Cam) engines have two camshafts in the head, in some cases these act directly on the valves. In this situation things get more expensive. Think bend/broken valves, holed pistons and in extremes, bust camshafts.

well she is home. i picked her up last night from derby.....i took a nice steady trip back down to portsmouth, what a relaxing trip it was too.  no slowing down for hills.....just sat at 65mph all the way.i reakon it cost me about £50 for the 200 mile trip in petrol......


what am i gonna do now i can hear myself think while driving   :shock:
