Title: replacing my clutch

what do people think a reasonable price for a garage to replace my clutch would be? 1992 200tdi
ive had one quote from my local independent lr garage of 500 pounds ish!
my next thought was il do it myself
do other people think that sounds rediculously expensive or is that the going rate?

Depends how you value your time, changing a clutch is not a quick job so when you consider how many hours work is involved the price is probably not too bad.

Ring round some other garages and see what the charge and compare.


I consider my time spent on hobby as fairly cheap/plentiful and have all the tools like engine cranes ready to hand but others may find the total cost of getting a garage to do it cheaper than the total costs if they did.

i got a full clutch, plus fork ,

labour included £250 all in

You could cut the costs down by doing the stripping out yourself. You have a choice of engine out or gearbox out, personally I went for gearbox, as we could slide it back out the way without actually removing it.

To do this you need to remove the centre console and gear stick gaters, then drill the rivets out and remove the ring around the hole.

You could even remove the prop(can't remember if you need to??) and drive to the garage in diff lock.  

That way youve saved a couple of hours workshop time.

I think £500 seems a bit steep though? The clutch is only about £60 MAX and the job is about 6 hours making the hourly rate about £70 odd quid!! that seems alot to me!

I charge £110 labour, Borg & Beck clutch kit is £70, and I also supply a reinforced clutch fork for £15. Do it yourself and save a good few quid.

i did mine myself it took a while but alot cheeper than putting it in a garagebut be warned its vvery heavy

I do the V8 by taking out the engine, I just don't like lifting the box without a ramp.

But I too find it a PITA, my last clutch has lasted 10,000 miles and is slipping :evil:

Auto it is then.
