Title: Front diff
Post by: katenrob on October 29, 2007, 17:06:28
I have some play in my front axle and so far ive changed both cv joints, drive member and both half shafts but still have a clunk.
Before i change the diff is it worth me re torqueing the diff pinion nut and see if that will take up any play and if so does anyone know the torque setting for it or have any other ideas what it could be.
Its a 24 spline type

to take up the play on the pinion you need to remove the diff and re-do  the backlash on the crown wheel
tightening the nut wont do anything
its isnt a job for you unless you really no what your doing
thers only a handful of people on here that can rebuild diffs, me included
but even so, i still hate doing them

have you located the clunk to the diff ?

if the pinion bearing is worn you will have vertical and horizontal movement.

sometimes the nuts wear loose (but dont build your hopes up)

as dan said,,you cannot just tighten things up like you would a wheel bearing.

Thanks for the replies. I will check for play and leave it at that. I do have another diff so may change it when ive got time.

YEah diffs are not the easiest things to do, even when I've done one I'm never sure I've done it right.

Mind, if you think Rover ones are hard you ought to try the English axle fitted to RWD Escorts, in the workshop manual the axle section is longer than the engine section.  There's a choice of 2 engines

Shame he's so far from Cumbria, with guys like him around it's just not worth DIY.
