Looks like we are about to get charged double for rubbish collections folks. After all, we pay for it in the bloody council tax already :S
-
Theres a shock
-
You sound surprised!

no, I'm not really.
Having just seem my Air fare for the hols next year
£230 on flights, £250 on taxes!

Hols??? What are they?? I can't afford them because of all the tax the government are extracting from me
So, if we take our refuse to the local tip ourselves, do we not have to pay the tax? Somehow I suspect we will!

you'll be exempt from the tax but they'll charge an admission fee at the tip and if you get stopped on the way to the tip you'll get done for been an unlicensed waste carrier.

I'm not allowed in my local one anyway as the Disco is a 'commercial veichle'.
I wonder why fly tipping is opn the up? I have to drive 10 miles the wrong way to get to a tip not run by morons.
-
The UK countryside will become a tip.
People are too stingy to pay for decent food nevermind pay to dispose of the packaging.....
Which genius thought this one up I wonder

Don't start giving them more tax creating schemes.

Offset by a reduction in your council tax. The rest is EASY by throwing less away.
REDUCE the amount you buy and the amount of packaging you accept i.e. unwrap it at the shop and leave the shop to dispose of it.
REUSE. Theres plenty of plastic out there that can be reused rather than throwing it away or buy something that can be reused. I can't help thinking that those plastic milk bottles could be replaced with reusable options but that's a long way off. Compost kitchen waste is another reuse option that saves you cash on buying the stuff.
RECYCLE. If you've been clever with the first two above then you won't have much of this either. Most supermarkets have bottle banks etc, just include it in the trip to the supermarket.
I do all these and our wheelie bin is not even half full each week with a family of four. I reckon that I could leave our bin two, sometimes three weeks between collections so that would be all I paid for.

Come live down in the warm south in the summer where we already have 2 weekly collection, the bins stink, fly's and rat's are becoming a major problem (esp. those areas still using bags not wheelie's), and country lanes are regularly used as tip's.
People are basically lazy, you need to get them to 'buy in' to these things, nothing else will work, attempting to force the issue only makes it worse!

We used to have a version of that when I was little, they called them milk bottles. This guy called milkman used to deliever full ones and take empties back to be refilled.

I seem to remember a time that a little man bould bring strange hard but clear containers of milk and leave them ouside the door, and take away the empty ones that we left out to be cleaned and reused. Strange thing "progress"
, £250 on taxes!
Not all is tax (or duty) http://www.caa.co.uk/default.aspx?catid=589&pagetype=90&pageid=2449 most is added by the airline.
Just a diffent way of including charges to make the fare look less.
-
doesn't worry me so much, all our rubbish is still piled up in bags at the end of the drive (colour coded for recyclables) and I tend to produce far more recyclable stuff anyhow...
but if it comes to that, I'll just leave the bags outside someone elses house :)
for the rest of you, there's always 3am and other peoples wheeliebins, the local MPs would be a good place to start
-
Incidently the plan has been approved in light of a probably hefty fine for not reducing the amount of refuse from the EU... wondering if they're just going to bank the money and pay the fine with that.
Usual case of attacking the symptom rather than the problem, then again as a species we're quite good at that.
-

We buy most meat, veg, eggs, etc locally from producers anyway, so it doesn't have any specific packaging. Just something to carry it in. The last beef we bought, we first saw it while it was still walking! And had a duck last Monday that was still flying on Saturday!
RECYCLE. If you've been clever with the first two above then you won't have much of this either. Most supermarkets have bottle banks etc, just include it in the trip to the supermarket.
Recycling would be fine if your local council will actually take the stuff. Ours is totally useless. The only things we can put in the recycling bin is paper and plastic bottles. No other plastic... no plastic tubs, plastic bags, etc. not that we have many. But they should get their own act together before penalising the public. And what if you don't go to supermarkets very often? We don't as I explained above. The very act of buying from those places is bad news for the environment. Sorry, that's for another thread though!

I'm not at all convinced that they will charge 'per collection'. It is far more likely to be an annual figure added to your council tax. So it won't make any difference how few times you have it collected. Until they get a bar coding or chipping system in place, they have no way of logging how many collections they do.
Ultimately, this is just another easy way to tax the public and look politically correct in the process. It is nothing to do with the environment. It's simply to raise revenue.

Many bins in Hants are already chipped. It was done years ago with the fake premise of dealing with the non existant problem of wheelie bin theft.
We do recycle in our household, but I fail to see the point when on bin day, the truck rolls up and both bins go in the same lorry!!! Why
Some counties are better setup than others. Hants doesnt seem too bad and there are a lot of recycling points about. The govt could be making it easy but the whole point I was trying to make here is that we already pay for this service as it stands.
Please remeber before you have your Rants that there is this huge gap in recyling facilitiesd. In East Sussex (Hove) Everything got recycled, where in Eastleigh, almost nothing does. The facilities exist in Eastleigh to do it yourself but in other areas they dont.
In Calgary I used to crush and keep my milk bottles then once a week with the daily shop they would go into a dedicated recyling point at the local Safeway. Only way to do that here is take them down the tip. A large number of milk bottles do get recycled though. This is a recent thing though.
When I got back I started doing the same out of habbit, gave up a few months later when I realised that the huge pile of milk bottles on my balcony couldnt be recycled easilly.
Its something we all need to do and something that needs to be addressed but as always in the UK, the bloody big stick is used as a motivator and this just cannot go on, its starting to demotivate people as it is and it'll only get worse. How about rewarding them that do recycle rather than punishing them that dont?
I'll recycle better when I dont see it all going in with the landfill waste, when the facilities actually exists to do it and when we stop this stupid environmental one-upmanship. The planet is going to hell in a handbasket but people are loosing interest because the hype they are forcefed everyday, maybe if facts were actually allowed to filter through and people allowed to deal with it in our own way things would happen faster. Yes I drive a dirty stinky 4x4, well two, and I dont recycle as much as I should, but how can I be motivated to actually do anything while XXXX industry is being forced down our throats as being the reason global warming/cooling/pole shifting/extinction/pick your own.
In short
Why the hell do we all get the blame when the people we rely on to make these things happen are sat on their big fat backsides doing naf all other than feeding us manipulated statistics about how me throwing a recyclable plastic bottle in the wrong bin will end the world.

You could always chuck in the fire :?

Stay in the South Hams quite a bit where for a couple of years now they have alternate week collections for landfill and recyclable. It's quite a mare working out which coloured bag to put each type of waste in to start with as well. But the place I stay in is one of five properties with no space for their own bins so they have a communal area for them. Fortunatley they have got their act together to share the bins and there has never been any probs with smells or vermin.
Industry won't change its way until its customers demand it. There are plenty of examples but if people start to leave the packaging in the stores etc then it won't be long before the stores convince the manufacturers to use better and less packaging.

Just realised something sardistically humourous about this.
There going to double the cost of waste collections, at the same time they are halving the collection dates. :?
So in one go they have managed to charge 4 times as much for each collection!
This has to be one of the greatest cons going!

Same for pop bottles. Funny how recycling is the latest thing when it's actually the oldest.
-
Funny what some of you have said about recycling. In Rotherham they only seem to 'recycle' stuff they can sell.
So tins and bottles get collected, green waste and cardboard go to the ******* farmer near us to get pulped into 'fertiliser' but plastic? no-one wants it second hand so it still goes to landfill.

Yet Linpak one of the market leaders in plastic recylcing are just up the road from you in Allerton Bywater (Just north of Castleford). They've been collecting plastic for recycling in Leeds for many years now. Though I've moved into the Selby area just next door and they don't collect plastic here so I take it to the supermarkets in the Leeds area where they have skips for it despite the council collecting it anyway whereas in Selby they have neither - go figure.
On top of the implanting of chips in wheelie bins - which is widespread - most new bin wagons are coming equipped with weighing equipment and chip readers built in to the wheelie bin lifts.
-
My local council "recycling" centre is totally useless. They put big signs up stating " we have recycled 15% of your waste last month".
Is that all ?
Don't even have a skip for plastic bottles !
In comparison, when i lived in East Lancs, they had skips for everything, & everyone complied and took an interest. A much better system.
I can see an increase in fly tipping, especially at the gates of recycling centres.
-
I've been cleaning my garage out thought I'd better get it done as they're making things more difficult to get rid of rubbish, had to use the wifes Pug 206 took 3 loads, could have done it in one with the pickup but I can't go to the re-cycling with it.
Will burn some of it in the garden tomorrow while its still firework season.
Through the winter i put some of the house hold rubbish in the wood burning stove.
-
The main thing, IMHO, is to buy less in the first place. Don't use supermarket packaged products. Buy locally produced, fresh food. That way, there is less waste to dispose of.
I happen to have had, this weekend, some shop bought eggs and a tray of free range from the local farm. The farm eggs were fresher, better flavoured, and *much* cheaper. Why, oh why, do people think supermarkets are cheaper? I appreciate people in cities don't have access to fresh farm eggs as easily as we do in the country. On the same basis, it mustn't be assumed that everyone has the same access to recycling facilities. Rural councils have a far more difficult job in this respect. They *must* address, this. But it is not as easy logistically as in cities.

im already suffering from this and it aint even begun. i live in an end of terrace house with an alley way between me and the neighbour. i now have to lock my wheelie bins up....yes you did read that right....i have to lock my wheelie bins up as people keep putting thir rubbish in our bins. and this is before they start charging
i first noticed it when i went to bring our recycle bin in after they had emptied it in the morning.....well it was still full.... :? there was a sticker on the top saying that they dont recycle glass and other contents that were in my bin. now i know we didnt put it in there   ...ever snce then we have had to lock our bins to stop this happening again....
but now instead o putting it in our bins they throw it in the alley way instead :? :?
we are on fortnightly collections as it is now. we recycle what we can but the council are very picky at what they can take......why cant they recycle glass here but up the road they can :?
this is just a scam to get more money out of us aint it.....
-
I'm sure local authorities want to do it right, but at the same time they will be rubbing their hands together with glee at the idea thay can charge more for it.
-
I've got so tired of by weekly collections and over flowing bins that i now have the policy - if it burns then its burnable, why should i pay £160 a month to have my wheelie bins stolen off my drive and have to sort my own rubbish ! and on top of that the glass collection this week was refused cos there was water in some of the bottles !!
-
Apparently in Spain the councils collect all the rubbish then sort it out in local recycling centres.
If I'm going to pay so much tax to keep scroungers and imigrants on the dole then let's have them do something useful and sort out the rubbish.
Maybe if they had to work for the handouts they wouldn't be trying so hard to get into this country.
Discuss......

Hmmm..... the words 'worms' and 'can' spring to mind
-
Around here the household rubbish will just be dumped on the street (with everybody shredding any letters so no address can be found) and the council will have to come and clean it up anyway except it wont be in neat piles so it will take them longer. Dosn't make any sense to me.
-
I would just like to put a reply in here from someone who is a bin man and can see what the process is.
the council I work for has the moto on the side of all thier vehicles saying, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. that has been mentioned somewhere before.
Our bins are on a fortnightly collection collecting landfill waste one week then compostables the next. However there is a 2nd lorry going around collecting recycling which here is glass, cans, plastic inc plastic bags, clothes, shoes, paper. Cardboard and phone directories obviously go into the compost bins.
We sort the glass, plastic, cans and paper out at the side of the lorry as we load them.
If you were to see how much waste some people generate and how fast the land fill sites are filling up I think you would all be in a better mind of why the councils are actualy going down the route of paying for waste to be gone.
I will down load a photo of the land fill site taken the 3rd week in August and I will put a line of where the rubbish is now. I think you will be shocked.
The land fill site we go to was predicted to last 5 years and that was a year ago. now it is predicted to last max 1.5 years. 6 years ago when my driver started she said it was estimated to last 20 years. amazing how fast the estimated years are reducing.
Lots of people do need educating about recycling. Alot of the country is good at recycling though.
I have heard rumours that with this charging of rubbish will work like this. But remember this is rumours I have heard so how much truth there is I am unsure.
You will be charged to take black bin waste away (land fill rubbish)
for the recyclable waste you dispose of you will get money for. so if you recycle more than you throw away then you will be quids in. although if you put the wrong stuff in your bin to make the recycle bin heavier then you will be fined.
I am yet find out how much truth is in that scheme!!!!!
Also to end this post, I am lead to believe that my council were the biggest recycling council in the country last year. Fortnightly collections have been around for years here too.

here are the photos.
this was the view. That level was about 1 lory height below ground level. Now it is 1 lory height above ground level.

Where the rubbish is here that is all 1 lorry height above ground level. In the top right corner of the photo you can se a black base. that is chopped up tyres. That level is 2 lorry heights below ground level. that is a new "Cell"* that is now half way up the sides.
A rough idea of size of a cell.
* a Cell is roughly the size of a football pitch. There were 3 cells to this hole. when I started in May the first cell was just reaching ground level. cell 2 and 3 were not even finished to be filled in.
I don't know if this helps anyone understand how fast the land fills are actually filing up but thought some people may like to see anyway.
