Much the same reason as when in a war film the soldier who starts saying "when this all over, I'm going to buy alittle farm and settle down", usually gets bumped off

... and the same reason people run away from the bad guys/monsters... by going up....

Lemme see... shall I run fast and get as many possible route choices between me and them/it or shall I run up like a frerret upa drainpipe to a roof where I will be disappointed to find a distinct lack of exits... other than the rather obvious one!

Same reason the 'new' character in any Sci-Fi episode dies horribly not long after they start.

If they happened to be an Ensign in any Star Trek series dont even try remeber the name, they wont last long enough :)

It's a good job monsters and ghost are slow. Scooby and Shaggy take ages to actually start moving after they start running! Sorry, is that not the sort of scary movie you mean?

Why doesn't anyone ever kill Jessica Fletcher in Murder she wrote. Sheriff Amus could even find his nose with both hands glued to it.

Watch hard boiled, they only run out of ammo once. Just to build tension, amazing how many rounds a 6 shooter holds!

The same sort of people who, move into a house where their small kid is in the TV and blood drips from wall sockets and taps, while a disembodied voice tels them to GET OUT.
If that's not a hint then I wouldn't want to find out what is..
 Pete.
