ok the title might confuse afew people so heres what i mean....
ok i have done quite alot to my disco in terms of off-roading mods, and is no where near in standard form, but i also have a second car which i use everyday to get to work and back and do the usual in. plus if (when) the disco breaks i have got another car to jump into..... i only ever use my disco to go offroading in and maybe to shift something big in.....
the biggest problem i have got is that they are both road legal so that means i pay twice on tax, insurance, fuel, parts, etc..... i worked it all out and i most proberly spend £2000 a year to run my car that includes fuel tax parts etc and i was considering about getting rid of it and just use my disco as an everyday car!!!!!
ok at the mo its a V8 which does on average 12MPG (loads of weight been added) so wudnt be a good thing to do, and thats why i origanaly got my second car.... but im going to convert it to a 300tdi... ok ok it most proberly will use more fuel than my car does now (about 33MPG) but if im going to save £2000 a year from not running it which ill make that back up!!!!!
but whats worrying me is, what about if i break it, which i used to do alot, but im having a good spell at the mo !!!!!!!
so back to the origanal question, how many of you lot have a serious off roader which you also use as an every day car???? plus what sort of problems do you have to get around when it breaks and you dont have any transport?????
i think you lot might no what im trying to say now

I have the 110 for playing in, and lugging large loads etc, and the Disco is my 'work' car - it also carries large loads, but for work. In an ideal world, as both vehicles are insured for Class1 business use I can use both for work, but.......the 110 is broken and totally unreliable at the mo, and the Disco's autobox is having 'issues'
In my other ideal world, I'd trade the Disco in for something non-green oval - something that might work when I want it too !!!, but right now the Disco is not worth much, and I don't have shed loads of spare cash to find something else
-
My Frontera is supposed to be my main transport, but after so many moddifications of late it still has a few teething problems. So untill i get these sorted im running around in an old Cavelier, cant wait to get back to the Frontera though as i cant see over the cars in front
Cheers

My 90 is my off roader but also my every day car. If it breaks I am fortunate enough to have a hubby with 2 discos, a series IIa and I also own a SIIa which is currently not running, but as you can see I won't be stuck if anything breaks :D
-
4.2V8SC RR as everyday vehicle, 4.6 V8 Disco for offroading and stuff (and lending to people when their vehicles break...) - and the little 2.0GDi Pinin if the RR is in for a wash and the D1 is off with someone else :)
-
Mitsubishi Shogun as my everyday get me form A to B motor, it's also used for draging the tin tent.
I use a Bobtailed Discovery for Greenlaning and the odd bit of Off Road use.
If they both break I'd pinch the wifes Ford C-Max, but not to tow the caravan
-
Used to use one rangie (was the only one i had then) for offroading and every day, but i was only travelling 6 miles a day.
Now im doing a lot more long distance driving i've got an offroader and a rangie i only use on the road / for towing which doesn't see much mud...
found an excuse to keep my old one as well
for some time i did run a rangie and a vectra but got bored of it very quickly
-
I have Bigbluemaverick who i could use every day were it not for the tax levied against petrol, so as a counter strike i use my old mans spare 323 for day work.
-
If you intend to play hard and regular you need a second car. I run modded Jimny. For two years it was my main form of transport and I had a daily 40 mile commute. The number of late night repairs, borrowing transport etc. became too much, so now I run a second car, currently a completely std Disco.
-
I wouldnt say mine is a serious offroader but I still get to pay and plays and laning and still manage to break it.
My Mrs drives the other car the opposite direction to her works.
So a cunning plan was hatchted
I talked one of the girls in our office and her hubby into moving into our close
So know when the truck is bust I have a lift to work
But now she is preggers and will soon be on maternity leave Ill have to find another plan
-
Completely standard disco now, but starting to do little mods upto xmas, then after some big one's now im keeping it !!!
We had peugot 306td, which was great on diesel, but my brother bought it for a bargain price, now im looking for a 406 estate hdi,
ive been there with the disco been in the garage for repairs and it is hard work without a second car.
insurance wise for two cars one policy and two drivers works out at £45 per month, so not bad really
-
I tend to walk everywhere, but then I live 5 mins from Cardiff City Center, unless offroading, but at the moment all 3 of my vehicles are off road, and 80 miles away. :(
-
I use my series green laning and it does get some hammer, and also drive it everyday to work. If it breaks, I either take the day off, drive the 101, or arrange a lift.
-
I live where I work, so I walk to work. Amazingly most of the other people seem to drive all of the 500 meters, then have the balls to tell me that by using my 90 once or twice a week I'm killing the planet!
-
My modified Hilux is also my daily driver- if I break it offroading I'd be stuck. Trouble is I haven't mananged to break it yet- seems pretty bomb proof. I've had it airbourne, flooded the inside (twice), ripped the exhaust off, flooded the air intake etc etc and it still keeps going. If I could afford another car that would be more sensible- but I can't so the Hilux stays.

I use my much modified V8 110 as a daily driver, well, I would if I needed to drive every day, living next door to work means I use my push bike for everything except going to the supermarket and visiting the folks.
I have been using a metro for the last 6 months but I only bought that because the Landy was off the road (not in the good sense) and it will be given away as soon as it is taxed and tested again.
-
I use my BMW as a daily drive, need to as I do an 80 mile a day round trip to work, 50mpg makes it pay for itself almost.
The 110 is used for off roading, moving big stuff about, trips to the tip and the odd camping trip. Couldnt afford it as a daily drive thanks to the 12mpg.
The 109 is sitting at home until I have time to MOT it and sell it!
-
iv only got my landy and when, it broke last, i used my push bike. suplied by greeni

Mint !!!
Get yourself a bike to ride to work on, then you can go extreme as you want.... :)
And, Disco V8, you're in my pics from Silverdale !! click on my links
I mainly ride to work...it's good for ya, and the environment (not that i'm bothered)
-
i use mine every day,and its not your normall vitara,
i go off roading every weekend, then clock up 100 miles a week to work,
its all i can afford so it does me,tho i do have a real good stock of spear parts so if i do break it while off roading i just get it home, change what ever is broke and drive to work in the morning,
its never let me down 8) 8) 8)
mark :D

When you only run one motor for off roading and everyday, it's surprising how differently you access the risks of damage when on the rough stuff :)
-
I only have my disco Im a student and therefore cant afford more than one!
The plan is to make sure that its in as close to tip top condition as possible, that way I should hopefully be able to ensure I break as little as possible playing!
That said I do go very carefully with it- with the knowledge that I do have to go to work in it the next day!
Its getting set up for day to day use, THEN for laning and 'easy' playdays!

my elise used to be my only car and it was once off th road for 2 weeks after the pully wheel fell of at outlan park, although it would have happened sooner or later. Fortunatley I could get the bus form just down the road, to work in 20 mins so survived.
For some time I had the Elise and a Golf GTI whihc was grat cos I could work on the Elise but still get about if it was in bits. Also the Elise is not ideal for trips to B&Q.
Other things to consider is that although its spensive to tax/insure and maintain 2 cars. If you car does brake and you NEED IT then often you have to buy bits quickly or ask for extra help so wind up spending more on the repair, especially if you end up going to the main dealer.
Couldnt think of not having access to a minimum of 3 cars (just in case!)
-
my 90 which gets used for winch comps & is abused as it gets offroad gets driven to work everyday of the week
if it breaks it breaks,
ive got a recovery card toi get home & one o the boys at work goes past where i stay if i need a lift
-
Nissan Navara for every day, tax exempt lightweight for fun :D
-
I use my truck for offroading and daily driver .
I dont tend to abuse it offroad to much
Cheers Gav

Here at 'BTM Towers', there's;
My 110 'Heritage'
SWMBO's 'works van' for long/fast journies (Mondeo Ghia TDCi)
The 'spare-car; a Fabia 1.4Mpi estate (SWMBO's before she changed jobs & got the 'van'. We tend to let the Mother-in-law use it for her running about)
Regarding 2-wheels;
There's 2 road-bikes one set up as a 'training'/winter bike, the other is Titanium framed with a mainly Ultegra set up, a spare 853 frame/forks hanging up doing nothing, plus a Trek MTB
I also looked at another bike yesterday (alloy framed/carbon forked Cyclo-Cross)

WOW some good responsives with this post......
alot of you that replyed who go offroad only seem to either do green laning or a mild playday as you dont want to damage it to much.....
thats kinder not the sort of off roading im into  i dont think there is a pannel on my disco that has got some sort of dent in it or super seriuos scrach, ive broke half shafts diffs, gear boxes, ripped off wings, popped a tyre off many times, lost exhausts, broken lights, flooded the insides you get the picture......
so basicaly mine is no where near in the state of been called an origanal car
ive only ever had 2 serious problems with it since owning it and 1 was the gearbox and the other the engine, and both took about 2months to sort out in the end, but any other proplem ive had with breakagies they usualy get sorted over the weekend.....
plus just down the road from theres a bloke who i work with so could always scank a lift off him
but like alot of you have said its easyer to have another car to go get parts etc and plus its not as much hassle driving my other car everyday, you can stick the radio on cruise to work and relax in it, plus its great on the corners..... in my disco i love driving high up and can be quite aggressive in it as its either move over or ill move you over  but it can be quite hard to drive on long distancies, as it wollows all over the road

yeah saw them agies ago greeni looked at them when you reply on the silverdale meet post....
couldnt believe the remark you put at the bottom of the pic :?
i had been waiting agies for silverdale to pop up so i could test my winch out so when the time came i deliberatly kept getting my self stuck just so i could test out my winch, but how was i ment to know that my battery was duff  .... it never showed any sings of packing up so thought it was ok.....
how wrong could i have been... oh well the week after i was a proud owner of a brand new yellow top so my winch and truck shouldnt need as many tows this time
but loads of thanks to kev, ron and the team for helping out tho

I have the tranny for work [work for my self] and the wife has the 110 to drive to work.
So i have to be a bit mindful when off roading but then the red mist comes down and it usealy ends up badly and i get told off when i get home.
I would like a 90 for off roading but the we have a baby on the way so iv'e been looking at baby stuff instead.R/C cars , jet skis you know baby stuff!

couldnt afford to run the disco daily, plus it doesnt fit in car parks....and in sheffield open and street parking is disappearing.
so i have a nice new focus tdci for running around in, going to paddocks for spares etc. if that breaks work will sort me with another lol...
and for really nice days i have my gsxr and for days when i want something different i have my drz,,,,so i count myself as very lucky,
but not as lucky as thrasher lol!!
-
when I finish my projects I'll have a choice of all the vehicles in my sig, and; a nissan patrol, a DAF van, a rover saloon, some audi's and a nissan bluebird. :-) oh and a boat.
-
I drive up to 1200 miles a week and carry a HUGE amount of stuff in my car ( Pug 406 est ).so the old disco would not cope with that, but I do try to use the old girl every weekend, as it's nice to get in somthing different after sitting in the same thing for 25 hours a week. I realise that it is expensive running more than 1 car, in my case 3 what with the wifes Vitara as well, but for me an offroader as an everyday car is a no-no.
-
I'm a driving instructor (for now) so I have to have a noddy car, besides, the insurance is a whole lot cheaper on a classic car simply becuase it's a second car, so you have to think that your main car is insured for free.
