"Connect2 is a UK-wide project that will transform local travel in 79 cities, towns and villages by creating new walking and cycling routes for the journeys we all make every day. Crossings and bridges will be created over busy roads, railway lines and rivers, linking into new networks of local paths to get you to where you want to go."

No improvements to the motorised R.O.W. network then?

What is Sustrans current policy concerning BYWAYS? I have seen the sequence of events of a byway being included at part of NCN, then TROd then having the surface significantly upgraded. Coincidence maybe?
There were also concerns in the BHS at one point that the surfaceing proposed by Sustrans for bridleways would be unsuitable for equestrian use.

In Nottingham, one of the sustrans was definately not disabled friendly, and after some wrangling with GLASS's help they agreed to put in a locked gate so disabled runabouts could get through the obstacles they had erected to stop motor bikes. Then issued keys for the gate.

Well, that kind of clarifies their position
Quote
BYWAYS AND OTHER TRACKS
Current legislation allows access for motor vehicles over Byways Open to All Traffic (BOATS) and some Roads Used as Public Paths (RUPPS) where vehicular rights exist. This can lead to problems with offroading four wheel drive enthusiasts especially where they seek to re-open paths previously abandoned by motor vehicles.
Sustrans believes that Byways, RUPPS, many other country tracks and indeed some minor roads should be closed to all motorised traffic (with the exception of legitimate residential, business or farm access). Such proposals would benefit walkers, horse riders, horse drawn carriages and cyclists alike.

Can't say that I freel like supporting an anti-access organisation getting more public money.

Yeah, stuff that!

Sustrans are prolly big mates with any 4x4 Group when they want manpower, machinery, and/or experience to help sort out the canal towpath.

But then want to exclude the same 4x4 Group from everywhere and everything else they have their fingers in, just not nice!

Some people are so anti-4x4 that I've even experienced this from walkers on a hike that I was providing radio cover on, using my 4x4 to get to the spot that needed cover.  You have to sit there and explain that they won't have a signal on their mobiles (they all check!), and you're actually there for their safety; it takes the fun out of the day.

Sometimes you're just wasting your time, and unfortunately for the rest of the walkers, you make the decision not to volunteer the next time.

I cant see that support is really in anyone interest in this case :( A lot of us do a hell of a lot of work to keep byways open and passable, I have no intention of supporting naything that will jeapordise the hard work of GLASS/CRAG and others thank you.

Gotta say, Sustrans is liable to get short thrift on any forum supported by the laning community.

...or the boating community, or the horse riding community......

and this 'un, ain't no different!

Cheers
