Just wondering how common this is;
Got back today and could hear a wet rasping sound coming from the rear of my disco... walked round the back expecting to find air escaping from the tyre as they are probably a bit wide for the rims... but no rear mud flap and inside of the tyre covered in oil or something
Immeadiate thought check brake and fuel lines and then found this:

click for bigness
you can see the it bubbling out from the bottom of the shock where they are welded:evil:
At least its the rear and easier to change, and wouldnt have minded, but i would have thought the shocks dont take a real pounding on the A43!

they will replace that under warranty, tell who you bought it from or contact procomp directly 8)
-
Did think about that, the only problem is they were bought second hand from a fellow member and although were brand new still in the box i think the warranty would be void.
-
nope contact procomp, they should replace it 8)
-
Sweet :D Ill contact them and find out :D Cheers

Just replaced the +2" Pro Comps on my Disco (wrecked 2 of em) with a set of +5" Rough Country shocks from Llama4x4 :D :D :D
Well Happy with 'em :D :D :D

I think that your washers are on the wrong way round.
-
That's the same way as I've always put them Dave.
The shape of the bushes stop the washers being used as a concave washer. Plus, if you used them as a concave washer then it won't hold the bush in place correctly and they will tend to forced out from around the washer, rather than the washer retaining the bush.
Unless you mean the cups closest to the axle mount, in which case these are welded to the mounting on the axle on Discos to retain the shocker bush.
-
is it only me that thinks its weird 'rough country' not only look very similar to procomp but also have a 9000 series ..... not just a different sticker is it??
-
No it's not only you
Gav

glad to hear it lol....so they cost roughly the same and look the same.
ive had a look on llamas site and those 11inch front shocks are going to end up bent...you certainly dont need 11 inch on the front of a standard lr set up....no where near.

I mean the concave washer being the other way round like the first example in your reply. if you look at how much flex the shock has at the bottom its not much as the washer will hit the welded on cup....oh hang on , I could be refferring to the top mount point  anyway, many shockers have snapped and this could be a reason for it happenning.
can you see what i mean?
(Wheres Mikeeeeee when you need him!?!)

tucked up at home not really GAF

I think i do and yes if the top washer were to hit the cup it would put extra strain on the weld :-k
I put them on the same way the old came off and as they dont come with fitting instructions thought this was correct ....if this is a common problem for ProComp and they are replacing loads of shocks, you would think that they would ensure that they are being fitted corectly.

Similar yes and they plastic boots that come with them are equally poor, but they are not identical. The rough country damper pins have a step in them and washers with different size holes so you don't over tighten them. they also have less thread to start with so there is no chance of the end of the pin being forced into the casing on the front axle. The bushes are also much more like LR ones rather than the massive blocks of rubber pro comp provide.

i have the +6 rough country shocks, i have met david at llama 4x4 and he says that they are effectiveley a mk2 procomp. there spacifically vaulved for landrovers unlike procomps which are a generic vaulving.
and yes those big red rubber boots they give you with them are hidious!

If it's an off-roader then there are 2 options for the rubber bushes. If you still have the retaining caps welded on then the bushes will work convex side in, ie the other way round. This is how I fit them and it gives a suppleness to them that you need for articulation. Alternatively you can chisel the welded on cup away (some of you may find it's already been done) and use the washer concave side in as above, the washer helps retain the rubber but it will creep and end up much flatter. I've had to retighten mine before now.
I ended up changing the bushes around on the LSE from the conxex side to the concave side with the welded on cup to give me a stiffer shock. Much stiffer, you feel every pebble on the road.
I've recently changed to Brtipart Cellular Dynamics, they come the same length as ProComp plus 1" which is perfect for my EAS and the rubbers are yellow poly as standard. The washers are flat, which is what the ProComp could do with.

As an answer on the pro comp shocks, one of mine snapped off completely at the bottom, I got it replaced FOC. no problem, the old one had 2 small tack welds holding the threaded bar into the shock, the new one has a beefy weld all the way round, they must get this problem a lot!!
-
:D
One of my Pro-Comp rear shocks snapped on the weld too, phoned Paddocks and they replaced no questions asked.

If Procomp didn't have such a good replacement policy, how long do you thing they would last before people stopped buying them?

Hope your wrong Bulli, my full set of Challenge kit arrived today, they are only +5.5" on the drop and the turrets are +2" to aid with upwards travel so about +3.5" unless I have this mixed up

just swapped mine over and it was exactly the same, rang explorer and asked if it was a common and they said " weve had a few go like this!"
Keep an eye on them if you've not had yours let go yet, should imagine the newer ones are stronger with the decent weld!
