sometimes an overhead doesnt do any damage, new headgasket and away you go, and another time it can do lots of damage , by warping the head etc, needs pulling to bits and checking out.
take it it has water in it?
not lost coolant through a leaky hose or split headertank.

Paddocks had some brand new heads for £300inc VAT ready to go.  No brainer if your is cracked, the 200 TDi head is probably worth most of that on flea bay as new they still cost £500 plus VAT
