Title: LIGHTS problem and high emisions on mot HELP!!
Post by: MY90 MY LIFE on November 05, 2007, 16:34:22
I was cruising alongside a shogun at 85 and my dash lights flickered, then flickered again and i seemed to loose all lights dash, heads sides rear the lot. full beam still working and so is brake and indicators, due to everything not workin that is controlled by the light switch, not working i asumed the switch was at fault, removed the ignition shroud and the switch and it seems in perfect condition, looking at the switch it just bridges from brown to the other wires to work i tried bridgin but still no joy. any ideas??

also she failed emissions for the mot and ive added red ex and ulimate diesel any oher ideas (im thrashing her around whilst the red ex is in)

its annoying cuz all lights worked at mot time grrrrrrrrrrrr

please any ideas would be a great help

thanks

can't help on the wiring side but the for the emissions take the air filter out or put a new one in. another thing that works is to limit the revs if you can't rev over 3000rpm the emissions will be lower.

i bet the mot tester is putting his lead boot to the deck instead of building up the rev's
this isnt the correct procedure
so this time around, restrict the WOT movement, and make sure your there for the mot !
and if he boots it, just make him aware of the correct way to do a mot emissions test

lights, is it only the clocks and dash that aint illuminated ?
or you lost the whole lot ?

IVE LOST THE LOT!! dipped headlights, sides and rears and dash lights - still got all indicators and full beam. so ive lost everythin controlled by the toggle switch on steering colomn but switch seems fine

the emissions apparently he is doin correctly because i explained its been sitting they take 6 readings at diff revs then do an average
mines 7.46 needs to be 3.00 there is hardly any smoke visible in my mirrors when driving dont understand.

Hope you don't mind me jumping in - I've had duff 'toggle' switches on all my Defenders, and none of them ever had any visible fault.  I think the moving contact just loses its spring pressure onto the fixed contacts for the dip circuit (the dash lights go at the same time).  Not popular driving round on main beam......  Just bite the bullet and replace it in my experience - doesn't look very mend-able.

Don't know what steering wheel you've got, but with the bulky cushioned wheel centre I found it easier to take the wheel off when fiddling the cowl off the column - or maybe I'm just ham-fisted!

Cheers, A

The usual trick is to go for a good long blast before the test - get the engine good and hot, and clean all the crap out of it, before the tester gets his nasty mitts on it !

Forte diesel treatment is amasingly good stuff.  If you can get some of that its worth a go..

I have a mate who works on taxis for a living.  If he cant get em though the emisions he removes the fuel filter, tips half the fuel out and fills it back up with either forte or redex.  I am sure it probabaly isnt a good idea to be done on a regular basis but if it gets you the magic ticket...
