Title: ABS Works, but making funny sound
Post by: Mud_Medic on November 07, 2007, 10:23:04
Hi Guys.

I have been lurking for a while, but his is my first time posting, please be gentle with me

I have a 2001 V8 Disco with traction control/abs/HDC and all the other clever stuff the brakes do, and this all works.

The interesting - nay worring - thing is, the ABS pump makes a constant quiet clicking sound when the engine is not running. Infact it is there 24/7 (well I have not checked at 3am!). It even does this when the vehicle has been left for a week or more.

I have pulled the fuse for the ABS and it stops. There is a current of about 150ma going through the fuse all the time.

I don't want to have to dig deep for a new pump, as the system still works, but I want it to be working when I need it.

I value your advice.

Many thanks

How long did you have the fuse removed for?

Take it out and leave for a good ten mins. It may work it may not but its an easy start and cheep fix.

I have left the battery disconnected overnight, and as soon as i re-connected it, it made the same sound.

Thanks for the re-assurance that I am not the only one. I will just have to take into account the draw on the battery and make sure i either disconnect the battery or run/charge the battery weekly.

Many thanks

I dont think the draw is any worse than things like clocks, alarms ect mine has stood for many weeks at a time and still started first time i drive it.

The reason for the constant draw is that the ABS never gets switched off, this is because if you had a the vehicle rolling with the engine off the system would still work, it's a safety feature.

The draw is so small, it has no real impact on the Battery unless for significant periods unused.

I've not noticed this on my TD5.  Daft question probably, but are you sure it's the ABS and not the SLABS?

I was about to comment then I stopped and realised the age of the kit in question.

Most ABS ECUs I've come accross do go off with the engine although I seem to remeber a conversation about some of the Jap systems staying active untill the wheels are stationary. I know the Audis is certainly off with the engine power, the ratinale being yes, the engine may die but you arent going to actually turn the key to the off position untill you arent at risk of becoming cannon fodder in the middle of the M25*

I would be interested in knowing what a main stealer would have to say about this though, the ABS shouldnt be doing anything at rest and ticking suggests that relays/modulators are doing something.

*possibly a bad example as that would imply you were moving to start off.
