Title: Turbo replacement questions
Post by: Mr Alford on November 08, 2007, 21:42:52
my turbo is starting to whistle a little which means it may be going soner or later so i am interested in getting a new turbo, what turbos will fit it i.e will a 300tdi or a td5 turbo fir mine as i have a disco 200tdi??

what uprated options are there and can you get uprated turbo manifolds?

you can make 300's fit, but its a pain in the ass, and your not gaining anything
13-15psi is plentyfull, when a tubby is goosed you cant get any more than 9psi even when tweaked in my experiance ( dont even go there....just awaiting for xtremeteam now to roll in    )

my comp truck is running a brand new stock turbo and its brill ( running 1.4bar)
why do you want a different tubby exactly ?
just run this one out until it expires,
your actualy running a higher pressure than a stock 200 engine btw

yep i cranked up the actuator 6 turns as it was running between 7 and 9 psi, it runs alot better now but its not very powerful and its useless at pulling away in second do you rekon this has nething to do with my tyres?

if your on stock gearing then yes

my answer to overcome it would be, dont fit a defender t/box as you'll hate it
fit a full width intercooler
then you'll have some grunt behind you

my friends challenge disco is on the stock t/box and running 35inch simex,
he got his tweaked exactly the same as my 90, and itll keep up with me just fine

roughly how long until you turbo spools up tho fro pull of 1st gear ?

now i would say thats normal for a 200
id be spending the money on a intercooler

me, ive got a straight forward supplys intercooler on mine, not all shiney and bingly like allisport or similar, cos end o day, it does the same job, and is only going to end up with a branch sticking through it one day anyhows
so instead of spending 400 quid, i opted for only 190 quid  8)  8)

you better off going through upto the axles though, you'll be able get hold of him, unlike sfs

ive had to move my rad back on the comp 90 to allow it to fit, and to fit the 8274 snugly inboard aswel
i cant fit my hand between the pacet fan and engine

...did you also adjust the fuelling to suit?

IMO a noisy turbo is one that is about to spit out some bearings... i would get a second hand one and have it re-built and look into new bearings/hybrid options using the same one (garret T25??) purely to make it easier come the day that it finally goes pop and chucks a load of oil down the hot manifold!

my 200 is upped on fuel and boost, and i really dont think i`m going to need anymore out of it unless i go to silly sized tyres (not whilst SWMBO is around!) ...and then it would envolve other major thins such as portal axles etc.... (to get 40" MT`s - nice) 8)

i`d look at upgrading the brakes firstly, the increase in power increases the break loading.. as does a lift (raises centre of gravity, thus more leverage over front axle) and larger wheels/tyres also leave the brakes at a disadvantage (think of the tyres like a flywheel...)

this means you can then chargeinto danger and be able to brake much later and thus over a route, faster!
