Title: BFG AT or MT on a 110
Post by: cotefarmboy on November 09, 2007, 16:47:46: Pick up my new 110 XS CSW soon and I see the stock tyres are 235/85/16 General but guess they will be road biased. As I off road a fair bit I will be swapping these straight away for some BF Goodrich. Will the AT's be good enough for muddy conditions or do I really need to go for the MT's? I had MT's on a 90 and found them noisy on the road and a bit slippy in the wet, given that the 110 XS has traction control etc I think the AT's will do.

Don't really want 2 sets of rims and have to swap over.

Any comments?

AT's seem to get a good press and a friend of mine who has alandcruiser uses them in all the places i go without any impedance

FWIW I'd probably go for the AT's

Post by: Lumbering Jack on November 09, 2007, 17:44:39: I use my 130 every day and do around 30,000 miles a year on BFG MT's and would go for them every time. Bit noisy but have had worse and they grip well both on and off road and seem to be wearing really well.

Had AT's on my hilux and they were good on road and terrible off it.

Post by: madmatt on November 09, 2007, 17:50:40: MT's! My 130 works hard for a living and is shod with MT's they aren't that noisy at all. Infact I don't even notice any noise. They stick like glue to wet tarmac too even with 3500kg trailer behind us.

Post by: Jimbo on November 09, 2007, 18:17:16: I've got AT's on the Disco - and only been stuck once :oops: , they behave well in the wet, and were excellent in the snow we had at the beginning of the year. They are getting quite worn now, but will eventually be replaced with more AT's

Got MT's on the 110 - being a hard top it's quite noisy, yours is a CSW so will have some sound proofing/carpet/seats etc to soak up the noise, but you will still get some 'whine' from the MT's on road.

Aye, good as it is it is taking a real battering with the amount of off-road work I'm doing. Always fancied a 110 and now they come with half decent seats and a working a/c and heating system the time is right :D

Post by: pondy653 on November 09, 2007, 22:33:17: I have Goodyear MTR's as fitted to the G4 motors and have found them to go anwhere BFG MTs will go on my mates 110 but I can leave him for dead on wet tarmac. Equally as quiet as the BFG AT only downside is they are about 20 quid more than the BFGs.
If Trac Edge had still been available I would have bought them and the MTR's seem to be as good as they were maybe even better.

Will check out prices for the Coopers, Generals and BFG before deciding. I'm running 19" Goodyear MTR's on the D3 and am pretty impressed, never considered them for 16" rims so will take a look.

Post by: spy on November 11, 2007, 19:26:35: I have AT typres (various makes but none BF) and took it to briercliffe today in some serious mud. I was amazed where it would go considering the tyres.

If you spend a lot of time on road and are bothered about road noise I would buy the ATs. Either that or buy some cheap muds and do me a swap ;)

Post by: Range Rover Blues on November 11, 2007, 22:51:54: If you don't drive like a loon then the MT will be fine as an all-rounder. O find a bit less precise for cornering and a lit less braking grip, but I have a V8 RRC :twisted:

Post by: kzycnn on November 12, 2007, 07:40:25: I've got Cooper STTs fitted on my 110. Excellent tyre - worth considering against the BFGs and they are a bit cheaper. I don't find them noisey at all - tyre noise is less than my Disco 2 was on Goodyear MTRs.

Good on and off road - no complaints at all.

Getting fitted next week so will have 5 x 235/85/16 General TR's for sale with delivery mileage only.

i paid Â£88.13 each with free delivery and a local tyre fitter put them on for Â£40 not bad i thought. for five mt tyres.

Post by: thermidorthelobster on January 02, 2008, 17:23:53: Been very happy with my ATs but after about 50,000 miles I think they'll need replacing before I've done another 15K. Will almost certainly go for more ATs but after reading this I'm a little tempted by MTs. How much noisier?

Lets face it defenders are noisy anyway .Mine is a csw so has a little more sound proofing then say a hard top or truck cab.
