Hi folks I am in need of some advice on alternator wiring, I have fitted the 200 tdi engine and the alternator has different connections. the loom on the 90 has the black plastic block with two thick brown wires and a thin wire, but the alternator on the 200tdi has a connection on the back which is a 8mm thread and a connection that is a 6mm thread, also a little black box with a spade connector. how do I connect my loom to this alternator? can anyone draw a diagram for me.
I started the engine for the first time today what a relief :D :D well happy with how it has turned out just got to sort this wiring out so I can take it for the mot [-o< [-o<

Ok, you should usually have 3 wires to the alternator, the battery feed, the one from the ignition light which you can find with a meter, the rev counter and perhaps a supressor (little black box perhaps?).
Can't tell you the colours off the top of my head but the thick one is obviously the battery, then look for a wire that's live with the ign on but the engine not running and connect this to the field or exitation.
If you know electonics at all the alternator comes from a single phase tapping out of the 3 phases on the alternator, so will show some sort of continuety with the battery terminal.
Perhaps the eaiest way though is to have a look inside, the ignition lamp wants connecting to the voltage regulator.

wot he said
had the same problem on mates 110 and did exactly that

I have done that and the batt light is still glowing on the dash when the engine is running, do you think it could be the regulator? but it is a brand new alternator!!!
And would it be possible to connect a rev counter to this alternator?

had exactly the same problem with a 2oo tdi disco and it turned out to be the brand new alternator was nakerd
if its the same wireing check the small blue wire for splits as well as this is the one that sends the signal to the dash wich lights up the dispaly
you could ask the shop wear you got it from to bench test the alternator and check to see if it is ok
failing all that ask a local auto electrican to wire up for you and check the elecrtric curcit for drain cost me £25 and was well worth it as it was him that found out the alernator was dud and he had the same problem with a particular make localy x3 times that week so it put me in good sted when i demanded a new one
