can someone please tell me how to check the oil on the auto box properly please
-
When the car is cold start it, let it idle and dip the gearbox oil.
-
do you put it in neautral or park
-
Before you dip it move the lever all the way from park to D3 and back to park, then you can dip it.
Sorry forgot that bit
-
I have tried various ways of dipping like slowly going through to d3 then bac up and wuickly doing it but I havenever got the same reading 3 times in a row.
I can go from just below minimum then clean dip stick and dip again and it will be about an inch over max.
I now go on the basis of if there is something on the end, it has some in!

Quote from P113 of Discovery Owners Handbook:
"Ensure vehicle is resting on level ground then select 'P' (Park) and start engine. With the engine running at idle speed and both foot brake and handbrake applied, move the selector lever to position '1' and then back to position 'P'.
Withdraw the dipstick from the filler tube and wipe the blade clean. Reinsert the dipstick fully and withdraw again to check the level. Top-up to maintain the level between the two markings on the dipstick with a fluid meeting ATF Dexron II D specification"
There is also a comment about ambient temperature affecting the reading and that the level should be checked at an ambient temperature of 20oC ~ so you can't accurately check it until next spring :D
Also bottom to top mark is only 0.25litres

Best thing to do is read the dipstick. On my LSe it says check in neutral when cold.
Now if I run it through the gears first then the level keeps rising as the fluid runs back down, so I don't bother too much anymore, just do it once to bleed the hydraulics then let it stabilise. Don't let it heat up though and don't be too tempted to add fluid, it's too easy to put too much in.
Conversly I used to have a Crapi Auto and that was in park, when hot after selecting all the gears at least twice. Easier to read though :?
