Title: Imperial nuts and bolts question

Hi, my series III is a 71 and is all imperial.

I am right in thinking UNF is Fine thread and UNC is course thread.

Im going to get som nut/bolt sets and want to get the right ones, im assuming its maily UNC?

Anyone recomend any good suppliers of assorted packs and any sisez to look out for?

PS I haven't done any work on it yet, but have actually driven it 3 times now to get stuff like plasterboard and loft insulation, MOT expires on 23rd Nov and I think ill do the work over Christmas.

Having never owned or worked on a Land Rover - I may be wrong but wouldn't the threads be either BSF or Whitworth - they certainly were on my old British cars.


UNF and UNC were a progression of ANF and ANC threads - which were American

Hi.

Unfortunatly it isn't that straight forward. They will use a few different types of bolts.

But on the whole it is UNF. but there is a few specalist one's that are UNC. I would advise that you get a Series 3 Workshop manual and the Parts book. and work from them.

I personally recommend the  CD ROM (http://www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk/shop/books-cds-dvds/technical-publications-on-cd-rom/land-rover-bm/land-rover-series-iii-stage-i-1971-to-1985/index.html) that can be brought from the heritage motor center, you can get these online and also from brookwells too. They contain everything you need to know about the technical side and will provide and answer to 99% of questions you'll ask during the rebuild.

YES THEY ARE MAINLY UNF MATE, BUT THERE COULD EVEN BE THE ODD METRIC ONE ABOUT.

Agree re the odd metric one.

When I took the steering cowl off every "bolt" was different, and one or 2 were wood screws!

I think ill get a mixed bag of UNF as I hate putting back on rusty stuff (where the ends have corroded so you cant undo them with fingers.  but anything "special" will be specific as things like driveshart bolts are high tensile etc.

dude

you could well find a combination a 71 2a/3 mine has unc unf and af on it on it due to number of previous owners it is best to get a parts book and a hynes manual i have replaced with metric

My 72 has unf, unc, whit, BA and also some metric on the bits that have been replaced over the years.
