Those muppets host an evening show on sky one called are you smarter than a 10 year old, dont think they could answer the q's probably why they are hosting it
should be called Ant and Richard (Shortened version of Richard though   )
-
hahaha have you seen that sticker?
"i would rather push my landrover than drive a jeep!!!!"
its brilliant!
-
The phrase "there's only one Jeep" comes to mind, a slogan of this hideous Chrysler vehicle - why is this not a true statement, i ask at this time..........? it would make it far easier to erradicate this imperial Detroit monstrosity from our streets, and never again to be confused with LAND ROVERS!!!! see, it's not even spelt the same

To play devils advocate...
Jeep has entered the "english" language as a generic terms for a 4x4 vehicle and is applied to things such as toyota and Suzuki jeep. The Oxford English dictionary has to think long and hard about this sort of thing, but as language is a fluid and changing thing there are no black and white rules.
Other works such as Hoover and JCB have become synonomous with the device not the brand, and ipod is another emergine one.
But I still think that ITV is aimed at morons so none of this really matters.

i moaned @ my solicitors for calling the zuki a jeep.... but then my nan calls it a jeep to but shes 90 n dosent know ne better

Interestingly (if you are a car bore)
Allegedly the term Jeep sprung up from GP meaning general purpose vehicle. during WWII. When they started making them later they branded them as Jeep. Therefore you could say the word existied before the brand despte the fact its now a trademark
However as someone who has been accused of "Talking Posh" or being a over privileged geek, because I call things their correct name I would have preferred it if the vehicle was referred to as a Landrover or 4x4.

.
Does this mean that Land Rovers are copies of Jeeps :?:
-
Yes. The original center control prototype ones especially, were reverse engineered copies of the willys jeep.
-
Firad so!
its historical fact that teh guy ho designed the first S1 did so becuase ha had a WW2 "jeep" that he thought was good.

So maybe the slogan should be changed.
Instead of "There's only one Jeep", perhaps
"The FIRST 4x4xfar",
or
"Who's the Daddy!"
-
BTW.

Funny how the LRO's were watching it then...
-
Allegedly because its on after 7.30 all the jeep owners have been sent to bed by their parents. :-)
-
saw it and blood was boiling, even the celeb's were calling it a jeep,
Wow, I bet I could cause you a heart attack... :)
If that's all it takes to get your blood boiling, you must have one hell of an easy life!
PS.... you drive a FAKE Jeep... is that better
-
Would you feel better if they had called it a Ford?
Or maybe a Mahindra.
-
No, they want it called a
a series 3 swb
(Even he didn't call it a Landie!)
And remember, the licensed Mitsubushi came before the Landy as well :)

saw it and blood was boiling
??? short fuse have we???? take a chill pill & calm down.....
"i would rather push my landrover than drive a jeep!!!!"
just as well, by my experience of the green oval ground anchors.......
-
How many of you INSIST on calling it 'doing the nilfisking', 'doing the dysoning', doing the vaxing', doing the electroluxing'?
None of you. 99.9% of you would call it 'doing the hoovering'.
Its a brand name thats become a generic term. So what, get over it.
-
Another day, same old shat from the blue oval guys.

OK so we are all in agreement with regard to the evolution of 4x4.
The Jeep was first so is represented by the monkey
The Mitsubisi was second, so is a taller stronger monkey
The Landrover was later so is more akin the ascent of man and the dawn of intelligence and civilization
(http://www.kheper.net/evolution/ascentofman.jpg)
But NEVER let us forget that Just like the monkey, the Jeep WAS first.

interesting analogy..... :?
I prefer to think of LR's as the result of messing about with stolen DNA!!!
The monkey is indeed a Jeep, but so is the guy in the spacesuit!!!
-
Its more like a fork in the family tree. Slightly different evolution, same final result. 4x4Fun on wheels, no matter who's 'family name' you have 8) Whether you like it or not, we're related.
-
Glad you can see im only teasing :-)
-
Willys made the original Jeep, but was it not Ford that made them en mass for the army or something?, and then either the Spanish or Indians started making them under license around the same time as the Japaneese (Mitsi) too ??
-
I'm always up for a laugh. Its just when people get WAY too serious about stuff like this i get..perturbed.
-
And wasn't the 'J' in Suzuki LJ or SJ referring to 'Jeep', but they weren't allowed to call it that so it got shortened?
Might be talking spheroids there, but something in the depths of my otherwise empty brain seems to remember that :D
I'd be lying though, if I said i didn't get mildly annoyed at people calling my LR a Jeep! Bit like my MG Midget getting called a Sprite..... i gave up explaining in the end

I think my Disco usually has more computing power than the chap on the right hand end...

Jeep is a well loved universal term for off roading vehicles, short and to the point too.
You green oval badge owners are just jealous that Land Rover isn't a term associated with every day froading modes of transport.
Jeep is here to stay so live with it boys
-
Gotta say, Noone has ever walked up and said "Nice Land Rover" at my jeep though :)
. o O (is that just being cruel)
-
Do people actually say 'nice land rover'
Is there such a thing
-
OMG !
I'm thinking someone is baiting for an argument here [-X
So, let me just stop you right there =;
what ever vehicle you drive its because you like it, we (LR drivers) feel proud to drive british heritage, nostalga, a very capabile 4x4 that is an icon - like the beetle or the mini , you feel proud to drive a jeep, so lets all get our high horses with mine is better than yours and accept we all love MUD !
Sensible head off now !
-
Spent most of saturday morning following a 110 around and it flexed well....
The term Jeep came one thinks from General purpose when the US army was looking for a 1/4 tonne truck for war use but there is a school of thought it came from a cartoon characture called Geep?
Either way were it not for the old Ford GPW/Willys MB or even the original bantams we'd all be driving X5's or worse ML 320's or X3's..................
Go figure
BF
-
ive been trying to think of the term the army used to used,
WHAT DOES J,,,,E,,,,,,E,,,,,,P STAND FOR,
-
Just
Empty
Every
Pocket
Oh and here's a Jeep advert
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8qVM6f9Ogs
Oh and whats a Jeep Wagoneer...think it came @ 9 years before a Rangie as well....
Of course Ford also made Jeeps in WW2 but had to settle years later for Landies..... :?
-
Well can of worms and open spring to mind................wasnt putting down the jeep, just making a point. Thats all ive got to say on this matter
-
This thread is a bit unreal...
Does it matter what they called it...??
To be fair there was not a lot left of it, most of the interior had all been removed and stripped out... but I guess that normal for a landie...
He runs and ducks for cover
-
I thought it was just baiting and banter myself...
So yes, it does matter :P
Remember, some will always take it seriously... our job is to shame them :D
-
You never do any properwork anyway Ed
-
Just to merge the family tree a bit more. The company that came up with the original design for the Jeep, Bantam Motors, was orginally called the "American Austin Car company". They sold Austin Sevens on behalf of Austin in the US.
Austin motors then merged with British Leyland. And which other well known car manufacturer also became part of British Leyland?...
And don't forget that Ford made Jeeps. Bantam wasn't big enough to produce the volume required during WWII, so licenses were granted to Ford to build Jeeps. And now they make Land Rovers.
In the end there is only two differences between most 4x4's. The badge on the front, and the open (or closed) mindedness of the person behind the wheel.
-
Ah so might have a mind then...........worrying...
-
look here for a repeat

well i WAS going to say people have far too much time on their hands, but as i have just spent the last 5 minutes reading each reply i am obviously equally as guilty..................
I do believe that before Jeep or Land Rover, the pharoahs of Egypt, the Romans etc. were all using wheeled vehicles of one sort or another, so does that mean we have to call all our motors "chariots"???? who knows...
Well it's all a matter of personal choice what vehicle one drives, but to coin a phrase, "there's only one vehicle that rhymes with cheap!" ha ha
