My disco is starting to struggle starting - its had a new starter and battery but been told its best to put a new earth strap and perhaps add a few others - any ideas were it is / how hard this is to do ? or were they may be best being put ? have had a search around and it must be an easy job to do - and an earth strap cant cost much though it was worth doing

IIRC the original one is near the starter motor ro the chassis, then you will find one from the battery to the body and on to hte chassis near the PAS box.
Mine has one near the alternator to the second battery and another to the front of the engine.

test yer glow plugs... mine need doing too....

i know the strap is shot - they did tell me it needs replacing and cant do any harm ! im sure the glowplugs need doing but will start with the cheapest thing 1st !

the main earth off the battery is easy to trace it just more or less goes stright down and goes to the chassis(drivert side).there is another that goes from the engine up to the wing on the passenger side.hope that is of some help.

just hope i can spot them all ! any ideas the best place to buy new ones from ?

Halfords sell them, they are a bit thin but that's what I'm using on my starter and it's fine so far.

Pop into your local scrappy and have a look round on the bigger motors, or vans, if you have trucks even better :wink:
Have you tried starting it cold with a jump lead from the battery to the engine itself just to confirm thats what it is

I have some 200 amp earth straps in my ebay shop if its any help.

nope never tried the jump lead - do i just put it to anywere on teh engine ? or do i need ot earth it down from the starter to the engine ?

Anywhere on the engine, the engine hook for removal is always a good spot.

Make sure its a good clean connection though :wink:

Try checking the fuel line for leaks especially around the water collection thingy at the rear end against chassiss rail they are prone to corrode and let air in and so causes it to take more turns to start as it has to suck the air out first. I bypassed mine altogether, I also thought glow plugs had gone as I was having trouble starting when cold but not when warm.

Bypassing the sedimenter...boy are you brave!! My friend here has just spent (well BP did) NZ$13000 :shock: supplying a new pump and fuel rail and injectors 'cos his '02 freebie didn't have a water trap.
Dunno how the tanks in the UK work but there is a real problem here with water in diesel sometimes as it isn't drained from the bottom of the tanks at the gas stations. :twisted:
