Some of you may remember the photography thread that was going a whle ago... well.. I've signed up with Picassa and here (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/Skibum346/CoombeAbbey)is a link to my first day out taking pics.
Still pretty much on the "point and shoot" setting... but I'm slowly moving it off there now and then... but really.. it's just SO good on that setting!
anyway... enjoy the pics... comments welcome...!

Get it out of that auto mode! The sooner you start playing around with Av and Tv modes, the more you'll fall in love with it. Then eventually get into full manual mode ;)
You'll find that the auto mode gives you some silly settings, for example I've noticed a few of your photos have been taken at ISO 400, which in daylight is a bit daft! Not just a failing of the Pentax however, they all do it! Only time I tend to ramp my Canon up to 400+ is when I'm taking photos indoors, mainly in the pub.
But I'm sure you'll be very happy with it, and you'll now have to start spending lots of money on lenses and other toys to go with it ;) Yesterday I treated myself to a Sigma EF-500 DG Super flash to go with my camera, to replace the nasty built in flash. Was going to go for a slightly cheaper model, but my arm was twisted by the rather lovely sales assistant in the shop ;) Got a soft spot for redheads...

bring back the good old dark room - little dodging and burning with push pulling development - thats photography :lol: :lol:
Just joshing, there are some real good shots there, you do have a good eye for a shot so thats the main hurdle over with.
As stated, try the Av and Tv modes, these will seriously alter what the camera 'wants' to do and lets you get more creative, you might want to invest in a good tripod, I'm a lover of the bembo range as I love landscape and close up photography !
Full manual give you the upmost control but I think its better to learn basics first and then move on, do things slowly and at your own pace to learn exposure correctly.
Also don't forget your rule of thirds :wink:

I was a long term user of an old PEntax ME Super in the 80's. Though I didn't process my own (did it a couple of times but it was just too time consuming and fiddly!) I did, by necessity do full manual thingy. Only problem is that so many years have occured from then till now!
I'm working at getting my eye in and getting focus sorted for now, need to get back to the manual to get a clearer pictore of the different modes and their use.

Could do with more contrast but the idea is sound. Spotting the opportunities is the first challenge and you've certainly done that.

Great set of photos mate, well done, Iv just started again and bought a Canon D40, I’m envious mate, wish I had your “eye†for a shot :? the hardest bit is to be able to “see†the image to take, and you look to be able to do that pretty well 8) Keep playing with the settings and you will only get better results :D

I really like a few of your shots.
The ones of the squirel sitting up, looking up the tree pictures and the carved man/monk are really nice.
Having the kit is a big part of photography, having a good eye for a great picture is bigger.
The shots i mentioned i think you've caught some great moments in time.
Nice lighting (natural, tree covered and a good time of day) are giving those pictures real depth and getting involved in the subject (looking up the tree) is giving the pictures life.
Get to know your equiptment and keep snapping away

There's a wierd thing- when I bought a new camera in September- where was the first place I went to try it? Coombe Abbey!

Had more to do with SWMBO wanting a bit of exercise to be honest!!!
Nice spot... as an ex piper I even got a chance to try the medieval piupes that weere being demonstrated in the visitors centre... so... good day all round!
