it spins on it own taken it off the back bit is in 4 bits how far ar woodruff keys in because bit that stick out from timing cover i cant see inside is that where keys should be or has it had it. orderd new keys and back bit of the pulley the counter balance thingy
-
i had this on my 200 but mine valves were hitting the pistons because of the woodruff key it changes the timing but i replaced all and now its quieter than before so lets keep fingers crossed for you
-
and it didnt take a chunk out of the crank ?
very lucky

Thing is, you may as well get the timing cover off and do your belt as well.
I had this last year, the outermost key had snapped and taken a chunk of the shaft with it. I managed to repair the crank with liquid metal and replaced both keys and the timing belt.

Mine did this and it was the pulley had cracked .Its a common fault .I did my belt at the same time and did the woodruff key as well.

I take it you have the 300TDi engine (2xkeys?) The inner one drives the timing belt sprocket and the outer one the crankshaft damper. There's a lot of vibration when this sort of thing happens, so I suggest you strip it right out - if only for peace of mind. The 200TDi engine has one key and if you can get all the bits out, then you could just slot a new one in without taking it all apart.
As Dan says - you were lucky if it hasn't re-shaped the end of the crank nose.
Les.

I have a 200TDi and it has two keys! Its a 1991 J plate.

yes but only half of the woodruff key drives the crank damper
and thats the problem in the first place
expecialy if you have air con fitted
everytime i do my timing belt when the pully is removed i always apply abit of locktight to help hold it into place
ive already had one wrecked crank, i dont want another
