, Hi all, i have a 1991 V8 disco ( manual) and i have recently replaced all u/joints in both props, a rear diff ( not for the above reason) but for a while now i have had a grating/loose sound coming from gearbox area ( it seems) It only happens when i come off the gas pedal and reamins till i accelerate again, i must admit it has got to a noise level that something is not right :( i have had a look/pull n push around under neath but not found a culprit as yet , i kinda have a feeling its a gearbox issue ? for the record the gears operate fine, and the noise is not any louder in any of the gears
Any clues ??

OIl level? water contamination?
If it's the gearbox it could just be noisy.
-
mine did that, everything worked fine but made hell of a noise on overrun, it was the transfer box, put a spare one on and it dissapeared.
must have been a shot bearing in there somewhere.
-
thrust bearing?
mines paggered, but luckily the clutch has started to die too.. so dont have to put up with it much longer!
-
It could be either thrust bearing or the transfer box.
I think I would drain the transfer box oil and see if anything comes out with the oil, while the oil is out remove the transfer box bottom cover and have a good look. This will be a lot easier than pulling the whole box and checking the thrust bearing.

is the replacement diff a good un ?
just check the pinion for play
drain the oil off the transfer box aswel and see what comes out

Now fixed, It was a kanckered front u/j  I was a tad suprised though as they had done 200 miles tops :( Oh well at least its sorted for a lot less work and money than a gearbox
Thanks for the tips

I doubt last sunday helped much eh!!!...;)

...another uj lasting less than a tankfull?!!
did you fit cheap and cheerful or hardy spicer or genuine??
-
Came in a hardy spicer box :?
Think i shall have to grease them a tad more
-
Was it a good fit in the propshaft?
I'd think 200 miles really bad though, even if you put no grease in at all.
-
i can wreck u'js in one weekend
they wernt cheap crud just been re-boxed were they ?
did it have gkn in the middle of the spider ?
200 miles is pretty damn low

Havent got catalytic convertors on has it, they sometimes make a very loud rattling, grating noise on overrun when everything else is nice and loose making small vibrations.
