Title: 300Tdi economy

My DIsco is officially getting 23mpg. How's that? :lol: It is about the same as my last 1. My Disco II got 17MPG average. :shock: Hmm :roll:

I'm reckoning it may be our diesel. All of me 3 Tdi's have been the same. All EDC ex Japan. All have had EGR disabled. I wonder if the cat is the thing to get rid of? :?

23 MPG would be good for a V8 but not a TDi, unless you're towing a trailer around all the time.

The CAT won't be helping, especially if it's old, but it shouldn't make that much difference. Try a new air & fuel filter, clean the intercooler on the inside and maybe a tweek on the injector pump diaphram. :wink:

Post by: lurch_917 on December 01, 2007, 13:29:26: my 300 manual is returning about 30-34 ive found running a good injector cleaner through it every now and then helps a big amount i my self use millers as this also bosts the octain rate also helps with the veggie oil

Post by: hrox on December 02, 2007, 00:44:52: atm i am avg 16 - 20 on my auto 98 with lots of smoke from the exhaust pritty much all the time. got info on another thread on turning the pump down and diaphram so hopefully if the weather keeps of today!

Post by: Ja1983 on December 02, 2007, 01:31:27: my 200 manual does 30mpg, pretty much regardless of how i drive/spank it... i would suggest trying the fuel/boost increase {here} (http://www.bobtail.org.uk/ninety/orange/ninety_19.htm) as this should hhttp://www.bobtail.org.uk/ninety/orange/ninety_19.htm the increase in power at lower revs could mean the engine isnt having to be worked as hard to get anywhere...

would perhaps suggest in looking for a manual next time.. !

Post by: Range Rover Blues on December 02, 2007, 03:49:31: Julie's TDi manual is doing 27/28 MPG with me hoofing at around, so I reckon it's doing well. It might get better, I pumped the tyres up yesterday :oops:

It's just had the head off, cleaned, new valve springs, valves lapped in, inlet manifold cleaned, silicone hoses, big intercooler and turbo cleaned up, it's going pretty well but smokes a bit so I'm not finished tinkering. Oh yes, it's got an electric fan on.

Post by: discowoman on December 02, 2007, 09:45:35: well, we have owned 3 disco's 2 300 tdi's and 1 V8....V8 was an early 89 on carbs and used to get 16 mpg round town and 24/27 on a run (better than my previous RR's) 1st 300 used to average 25mpg and the last one if driven with a light foot and generous use opf 5th managed 27mpg - but it had benen tweaked on the fuel pump and egr removed.......Friends auto used to do 30mpg no matter what, but a guy round the corner struggles to get 20 :shock:
typical land rover I suppose!!

Post by: Range Rover Blues on December 02, 2007, 16:11:34: TBH it's not just LR, I've heard Transits, Cargo trucks and Escort vans all do the same. By coincidence they all have similar timing procedures to the LR :wink:

When I bought my Cavalier I found the pump timing was retarded, possibly to make the lease-car engine last longer and it certainly ran quieter. As it needed all the help it could get though I adjusted it properly. Quite a bit more difficult to do but more accurate once done.

Whilst pump timing can be very critical to Diesel efficiency, I'm not aware of any way to tweak it on the Bosch pump fitted to TDi, perhaps someone else here is..........

Dunno why my economy is crap. Will remove the EGR and cat soon. Removed my EGR on other trucks and not a huge difference to economy. Maybe the cat is the problem.
