I thought I had a bad earth ... very sluggish to start, to the point where it won't. Seems like a dead battery.
However .... open the bonnet and it turns over on the button. Er .... anyone got any idea what the hell is going on - it's an ally bonnet so er .... <baffled>

Nothing touching the battery when bonnet closed ? Look twice, maybe the bonnet stay..
Could it have a bonnet/alarm sensor that's gone pear shaped ??
Maybe it's just witchcraft :?

Maybe coincidence. If it happens again try just popping the bonet from the driver's seat and crank it again. If the same happens then what Greeni said, the bonnet touching the battery.
Weird though :?

I'll check all around the battery :) The bonnet lining is pretty wrecked ...

I think you are on the right track with the bad earth, and somehow opening the bonnet moved something slightly and improved the earth.

correct me if im wrong, but the batterys sit lower than the radiator dont they ?
afink its as steve said, some form of bonnet switch immobiliser jobby thing :lol: :lol:
you'd no it if the battery was touching the bonnet im sure of it :lol:

No immobiliser in the bonnet area on mine - was removed ages ago...

Maybe battery recovered while you were opening bonnet coupled with plenty of diesel in the cylinders and bang she started.

If there was diesel in there ... then I'd worry :)

could the bonnet be pushing on something ?
i just cant see it hitting the battery as it sits lower than the front slam panel :?

the sound proofing under the bonnet could be wet and loose so in the upright position looks fine but when closed it sags down and shorts the battery or touching a dodgy ht lead ,on another car of mine I found out the spark from the coil to the dissy was traveling down the outside of the lead because of damp and dirt and the dissy on the v8's sits high at the front and the ht leads must arch up towards the bonnet :?
with it not starting I'd check the middle one first :wink:

Check see if there's an earth strap somewhere that could be getting fouled by the bonnet movement, or to a bolt near the slam plate
Try a jump lead from the battery neg to a good point on the engine and close the bonnet
