Title: Transplant…not the heart type!
Post by: BigSi on December 03, 2007, 19:59:43
When you transplant a 3.5 V8 efi from an automatic Range Rover into a manual Defender, is there anything you need to do regarding electronics. The garage seem to think that the engine problems are due to something not registering with the ecu, as it would in a Range Rover? Booked in on Thursday to be hooked up to a diagnostic machine to see if it can shed any light!

He mentioned something to do with the automatic gearbox and a link missing, but it was late and I’ve had a hard day, so I might of miss-heard!

The 14CU ECU has several inputs that tell it things about the instalation as well as engine operation.

It has a link to the gearbox so it knows if the box is in D/reverse etc or in park/neutral.  This comes from the starter inhibiter.  On a manual box there is a resistor instead so the ECU knows it's manual.  the ECU raises idle on an auto box when you put it into gear.

It also rasies idle when the heated screen is switched on, or the air conn supposedly.

It also has a tune select resistor to tell it which market spec, ie cats/lamdas or not.

It will also want to see a road speed transducer input.

However the ECUs are pretty much the same thing.

However if it's the older Flapper EFi then TBH, I don't know :?

Thanks mate. In that case, I wonder if the resistor or something was missing?  :-k  :-k  :-k  :-k

Got the Landy back from the garage today after a trip to Lucas. They managed to track down the problem to the distributor (something breaking down inside), after finding two ignition leads in the wrong position (no idea how?   ), and the timing was not at 6 deg, but at 18 degs!!!

Where is the best place to get a distributor from? I don’t really need the cap, rotor arm, or vacuum advance unit, as they are all brand new.  :-k

Also need a starter motor!
