Title: Disco Sounds
Post by: Evilgoat on December 05, 2007, 20:41:50
I like my music, more to the point I'm one of those who it has to sound RIGHT and splugring a good few notes on kit isnt beyond me. My Headphones are actully worth more than the tax on both 4x4s for a year

Replaced the dead speakers in Sereity some time ago and not too impressed, the acoustics are lousy and the mountings arent great, after some tweaking I'm more or less happy with the top end, but no low end. Meaning that from rock, to some of the weirder stuff I listen to, there isnt any 'kick' there. So decided to get a 300TDI door panel and give a go at rebuilding the built in sub.

Speakers came today, have stripped out the old ones and dropped the new ones in (Fusion, yes cheap but it took me about 45 mins to decide on them over £140 of infinity ones :) ) Currently hooked up to the stereo in here being put through their paces. Need to order cables now.

Will post pics of it all if people are interested. Dont think I'm going to retain the LR AMP, was going till till I opened up the amp and looked at the build quality

End result is to keep it looking as stock as poss, I dont want a huge sub in there.

Ill be watching this post with interest.

I have currently a set of infintity 6x9s fitted badly in the rear, and a set of 5" in the front doors, I have little or no bass. very poor when I listen to mainly house and drum and bass.

Im looking at fitting a baby sub in my armrest at the moment.........

Unfortunetly the Discovery is a rubbish place for bass unless you go down the subwoofer route.
Believe me, i've tried
Hence why i now run one of these

12" 1000w running from a 500w bridged amp
These are running direct from my Sony head unit

I'm a very fussy sound listener.
From all of my musical past (playing guitar, being a *proper* club DJ) i've got a good ear (no i haven't broken them clubbing) and expect a lot from a sound system.
I'm very pleased with how my car sounds.
Lots but not too much bass and plenty of mid and treble sound.
A good overall balance which is happy to blast anything from Rock to Dance and anything inbetween

I have a 12" Base cannon with built in amp in the boot on a Jack plug so I can pull it out quick if the space is needed ,in the front doors I have a couple of infinity speakers I pulled out of a wrecked fiat at the scrapers  8)  and in the rear pillars I have two blaupunct 5" mids from a vauxhall Scrapers again

Every time I go there I have a mooch around the new comers to see if theres anything interesting they usually charge £2 per speacker 8)

I used to think the Discovery wasn't bad .. until I got an RR ... they have certainly sorted the "complete" sound out. Jake can concur - Comfortably Numb was rather fun (although I'm still not sure WHY he decided to point the A/C vent up his shorts ;-) )

Oh and we had 2 of the doors open (which kind of takes 6 speakers out of the loop ;-) )

I replaced the standard speakers with two way ones, then after a bit of head scratching worked out how to connect the subwoofer to a head unit with no sub output (wired it across both rear speaker outputs in the end). I realise this isn't ideal, but it works and I get plenty of bass!

how hot does your head unit get?? ...and i assume you`ve got a treble blocker in there??

as i`ve just posted in the disco common faults thread, i`m looking to upgrade the "built in sat nav speaker" type of audio that comes as standard, with something more respectable, it will most likely be motorworlds best offers (JBL) but will be componants up front, 6x9s in the pillars, and a 10" sub in one of the former boot seat holes...
Alpine head unit already in, in previous vehicle, this was the best audio upgrade i ever did.. rover 220 buble shape, and the sound quality was much better using only standard speakers than the sony unit i killed previously.

money well spent, and for those who do like to listen to something other than tyre noise on the motorways, i`m sure pics and further ideas would be welcomed!

Can't say I've noticed it getting hot, it's been like that for about a year now.

I would have liked to have put a multi-changer on the original head unit, problem is the cable wasn't pre-fitted and I couldn't find a sensibly priced multichanger (or even firm confirmation that the original radio cassette unit would support an autochanger). I might swap to one of those head units with a DVD screen if I can find a sensibly priced one that takes MP3s and has a subwoofer output. Being able to connect the dashboard controls up again would be a bonus!

Ive been slowly collecting the bits for my install,
Nacamichi front end ( already in )
DLS 6" components in the rear pillar (already in)
now the bit ive stalled on !! other things keep need doing....
3 way DLS components for the front doors
2 x 8" focal subs for the rear
All active with an alpine x-over behind the glove box with 5 x Alpine amps mounted under the rear seat.
Bit of a squeeze but I hope the end result will be worth it.

Andy

i`m reluctant to stash amps unde the seats.. then again mine gets used as avan quite often...

theres also the issue of water ingress... apparently amps dont like getting wet.. neither does any electrical equiptment for that matter... and i`ve seen tide marks on the carpet under the seat!

Just to make this perfectly clear to all
The reason is was comfortably numb with ac running up my shorts in the back of Thrashers RR is....
We were all at Billing 2006, I'd just brought Pink Floyd's Pulse dvd for swmbo's birthday and we were listening to the Pulse CD in the Rangie.
Nothing weird
And yes, it did sound ace!
After that i stopped playing about and fitted better speakers and the big subwoofer.
