Took the RR for an MOT this morning, failed as the exhaust had split apart after the middle box.
Fair enough new one fitted but nobody could hear the difference, me the MOT guy, SWMBO, or the exhaust guy.
What the hell does a back box do then?

Not a lot really. if it had gone, and you replaced it with a piece of pipe it woould have passed too
I did that last year with the disco, no probs, in theory if it doesn't have a cat you could run a straight pipe through

Well, for a start it takes the exhaust gasses to where they exit from the vehicles cabin are, the exhaust must exit 'outside' the cockpit..... not under the car, therefore if you have a big leak under the car, then it'll need sorting for the mot.....

That kills my theory then; I though maybe it was a standard pipe and sized for a V8.
The new one is on and passed the MOT but it was upsetting; normally when you fork out for a new exhaust you drive away thinking 'oh that sounds better' not with no noticeable difference.
