Post by: jamesey on December 14, 2007, 04:54:33
my jimny has 15" wheels with colway 195 r15s on it what pressure should i have in them
i had 26psi in them but that was so skiddy on the road so now  i have 20 psi in them and it seems much better

My general take is that bigger tyres require lower presure to give the same contact area. For 195's I would say 20 - 21 is about right. I used to run mt 215's at 19 -20psi and my currect 31's are running at 17psi with perfect road manners.  There is a complicated formula to work out pressure but I don't have access to it here. Will try and find it later.

Here's the link.

Last time I started to discuss this it caused a bit of a polasrisation. Some camps saying you should stick with recommended pressure no matter what size tyres you run, others agreeing with me - bigger tyres allow lower presure, smaller tyres need more presure. Its the mass of air in the tyre that remains constant and so when placed in a lager space the presure is reduced. Within reason adjust the presure until it feels OK. At 21 psi on 195s your about right I would say. Drop down to about 17 psi for muddy going, 14 if it gets realy sticky, but blow em back up for the tarmac.
