whilst working on a machine yesterday that,s fitted with 7.50x16 tyres i happened to roll one of the wheels over and lean it on my disco there seems to be quite a size difference over the 205x16 tyres it has on at the moment, has anyone ever fitted this size on a disco? just for my own curiousity really

Plenty have fitted 235/85R16s which are pretty much the same size.
Look in Neil's (thrasher) gallery for pictures, I'm sure there are others in the galleries too.

they will fit but you might need to put a 2 inch lift on so they dont catch off road. i'm running 235 x 85 x 16 plus 2 inch lift

The beauty of fitting 750's or 235/85's on a Disco is you get up to 1.5 inches extra clearance under the axle diffpan over 205's. It can make all the difference when off-road.

And you can get snowchains from John Craddocks for only £40 a pair instaif of £100 a pair for the Rangie!

I tried my guyanes on the disco, before I fitted new heavy duty springs and gas shocks, it was catching round the arches and in the front inner wings. Not tried it since new springs, it wasn't a lift kit just heavy duty springs i fitted, must try again to see if they are ok

Go for it!
It's worth it at the end of the day. Fitted 235 85 16 to mine and they transform the motor. They give you the best lift of all. Under the diffs.

I have 750-16 xcl's for offroading plus 2 ich lift they perform well off road but make road speeds over 55mph very interesting indeed.

Is it caused by the tyres, the lift, the combination? Is there more work to be done in order to improve things?
I've heard many people talk about doing a 2" lift and fitting larger tyres, but every now and then a little "but..." or two get mentioned. It's something I have considered doing but I'd like to get the whole story on the overall effect it has on the car.
Having to drive at <= 55MPH would wipe it off my list :wink:

The 2" lift causes problems with the castor angle on the steering, much talked-about here before. Also the taller tyres can effect the steering, especially if they're MT. You could have a second set of tyres for playing though! and keep normal ones for the road.

But what if "playing" takes place 100+ miles away (which it seems to a lot!)? I wouldn't have the space/facilities to carry another set of wheels & tyres :(
It seems strange that so many people do it, if it causes such handling problems.

Design is always a compromise, never forget that.
The design of your car was a compramise, if you modify it you are moving one priority ahead of another and changing the compramise,
but still it's a compramise.
That's what you do, plain and simple. I'll drive to a greenlane day on remoulds (and I hate them), take my time and never forget that the car is on MT remoulds (from now on without a rear roll bar).
When I'm out with the family, the dogs or towing my NATO trailer I'm on AT or road tyres, with the anti roll bar back on.
For most people it's the same, you decide on your priorities and modify to suite.

the main thing with fitting taller tyres as how it affects your gearing, can make 5th gear useless if you go big enough. As far as handling problems if your car has decent bushes all round it doesnt affect it to much and if the streering is that unbearable you could fit castor correction radius arms, but these start a whole new ball game with your front prop so i'm told.
Lifting and modifying cars is a bit of a mine field and like RRB says its all about compromise

Hi all i have the xcl's only for off road use only and have traveld as far as woodlands in kent and bures in suffolk and have got used to driving at a steady 50 mph , i also have road tyres at the moment still only 205 x16 until funds permit i intend to fit 235's i :?: have found that handling and breaking is still not as it should be ,as motor is listing to right wondering if new bushes would improve things,
