Well in4 seems to be having some "issues" again trying to start the pig is getting a little boring now to be honest
I know its cold but i have to start at stupid o clock in the morning so why dont she wanna???
for the past 2 weeks the only way to start it first time is to roll it down the drive and bump it which  does cause a "little" smoke well ok a big black cloud and the belts squeel but then all is fine rest of day on the button fires up and away until........ this week so far ive needed to get the damn thing jump started at work as theres no hills lol
battery is only about 1.5 years old starter is only just over a year old everything in the car is off and unplugged where possible so why why why why is in4 causing me the grief lol
i do have some new glow plugs to sling in when i get 5 mins to myself though

My 300 tdi auto can be slow to start first thing (i.e first start of the day)
takes a while to catch.
its had new glow plugs, new battery.
i have checked to see what the alt is putting in to the battery by putting the test meter on the battery,
it puts in 13.80 volts when i rev it, is this right or should it be higher?
sorry for jumping in on the thread, but it might help someone.
look forward to your thoughts.

Is the fuel lift pump OK? I had the same issue with my son's Defender a few weeks back, changed the fuel pump and its like a different motor now, starts when you show it the key instead of nearly draining the battery as it did prior to the change.

Julie's used to be a PITA to start, even with a new battery. It just piulls the voltage down so far when it's cranking.
I fitted a decent battery, a Varta,rather than a hong-kong-fuey one and it's fine now.

my Defender does the same......had new glow plugs , starter, and alternator, everything fine with amps, going to check the earth wire from starter...
-
mine was doing the same, had a new earth wire on Monday... so far so good...
replace the crappy braid with a short length of proper battery cable, it will work much better.
I might add a secondary earth cable to mine, just to make sure...

I was told that a battery ought to be take off the vehicle every 6mths or so and given a proper charge from a decent charger as most altinaters only charge to about 85%. Might be worth a try. Any consolation my 300tdi auto is the same, worse if not run for a day but I don't know how old the battery is as I've only had it 6mths.
The lift pump theory sounds interesting too as I've been supicious of mine since chaging the fuel filter. It would prime by hand as per the manuel and trying to bleed it with the motor running just led to the engin staling as it dragged more air in than it pushed out?
-
I have the same problem with my 300tdi auto too. It only turns over slowly but just when I give up all hope and think it isnt going to turn over agian (about the 5th time) I floor the louder pedal and it starts up.
My battery is 1 yr old now, glow plugs 2 years lift pump 3 and alternator throwing out 13.80volts. I had to jump start it off my other car the other day and by gum I have never heard it turn over so fast. It was amazing.
Could it just be a 300tdi problem somewhere?

forgot to say that my lift pump was new a few months ago,
so thats new glow plugs, new lift pump, new battery, alternator putting out 13.80 volts.
i took the battery off today to charge from the mains, it was only on 5 mins and the charger showed it was charged so the alternator must be charging it ok.
like muddyjames says it must be a 300 tdi thing....
thanks for the help and advice
Merry christmas to every one.

Two things spring to mind after playing with my 300 early this year
Insulate the battery all round and from below, polystyrene as good as anything
The starter may need a service, the gearing in the thing may have old grease in it from new, and may need re doing, mine had gone like putty

I'm assuming you meant to type "wouldn't" there (apologies if I'm wrong). Mine had exactly the same problem, it seems that the fuel lift pump diaphragm can be fine under normal running but split when you try to use the manual priming lever. It took ages to start and was down on power. Replacing the pump fixed that straight away, and it's now back to scaring Golfs on dual carriageways...
Mine does seem to take a few more turns to start first thing at the moment, but I've put that down to the fact that it's only just over freezing out there.

Mixture of it all
slow turn over almost as if car not been used for months

when i first bought mine it had this problem the cure was check the amp per hour rating mine was too low meaning it cranked over to slow put a 85 amp per hour on and its been fine for the last six months you have diferent rated batts for auto/manual and deisel / fuey exon you might have the wrong rated battery on
