Title: Discovery Overheating any suggestions
Post by: stevepage3 on December 22, 2007, 16:18:48
Hi

My disco overheated when I was at nash, after letting it cool down we set of for home, about 3 miles in the temperature crept up and the red light started to flash, as I was on a main road I carried on for about a mile trying to find a safe place to stop. As if by magic the temperature then started to drop to about 3/4 on the gauge and the light stopped flashing. we drove all the way home with no further problems.

Any ideas what might be the cause, someone suggested an air lock but how would I go about getting rid of one.

Steve

i would suggest checking your radiator is not full of mud as this will block the air flow and cause your truck to over heat, then if it is give it a good old wash 8)  :D

Drain the system, refil it and check for any airlocks. Also, open the expansion tank when the engine is cooled and check the coolant level.

You could always backflush the rad with a hosepipe, which'll help clear out any crud that's accumulated inside.

But don't do what I did to my old S3...I pressure washed it and blew most of the somewhat rotten fins out!!! :(

As above, check it all out!

but out of interest, do you have aircon? If so, the aircon fans are set to come on when the engine gets too hot!! so that would account for why it cooled for you, which would also suggest that the viscous fan is FUBAR

Sounds like an airlock that's cured itself, possibly built up due to the angles you were driving at :?
